Why has Drew Carey
never even been nominated for an Emmy? He's much funnier than other
sitcom stars who are nominated all the time.
Jane Snyder, Royal Oak, Mich.
Carey's Wednesday night show, which debuted in 1995, was popular
from the start, but it's never been as smartly written as Seinfeld
or as warm and fuzzy as Home Improvement or Mad About You. Jerry
Seinfeld, Tim Allen and Paul Reiser are out of the way now, so Carey,
41, may get a turn with the golden statue come this fall. He still
has competition: Frasier and Kelsey Grammer, who's won twice, remain
sharp; Everybody Loves Raymond is, well, lovable; and Spin City's
Michael J. Fox probably could get elected to office for real. He
has three Emmys for Family Ties.
I'm an avid admirer
of Gina Gershon, but interviews with her always seem incomplete.
She's described as petite, but I find no mention of height or weight.
She's said to have a boyfriend, but I can't find his name.
Jodie L. Tefer Galveston, Texas
No woman wants to discuss her weight, and Gershon, who's thin
by nature and of average height, is no exception. She loves to eat
and distrusts folks who don't. She's not shy about her body (she
was nearly naked in the 1995 movie stinker Showgirls) but thinks
Americans as a group are uptight about nudity. Gershon, a true L.A.
"Valley girl" (raised in Woodland Hills) who starred in the just-canceled
David Kelley drama Snoops, is coy about men and her age (educated
guess: 37). Her most public love was L.A. restaurateur Sean McPherson,
but she has said she likes having "insignificant others."
Who are the NBA's
most eligible bachelors? My friends say Vince Carter, Penny Hardaway
and Chris Webber. What do you think?
Maria Jeter, Des Moines
The Toronto Raptors' Carter, 22, the Phoenix Suns' Hardaway, 28,
and the Sacramento Kings' Webber, 26, are solid picks. Carter's
even been called the NBA's most exciting player. We'd add two for
a bachelor dream team: the L.A. Lakers' Shaquille O'Neal, 27, and
Kobe Bryant, 21. Bryant has a hip-hop CD, Visions, due in March.
O'Neal has dabbled in music and movies, too. We also like the Kings'
Jason Williams, 24, and the San Antonio Spurs' Tim Duncan, 23, but
those bachelors are spoken for.
I'm a huge fan of
J.K. Rowling and her wonderful Harry Potter best sellers. I'm eager
to read the fourth book in the series. When will it come out?
Danielle Moskowitz, Cincinnati
The next episode in Harry's fantastical life is being handwritten
by Rowling now and will arrive sometime in 2000; she won't get specific.
The British single mom who is a publishing phenom -- 14.6 million
Potter books are in print -- promises seven titles in all by 2003
and warns that the final book will be the scariest. Warner Bros.
is counting on the wild-about-Harry crowd to make The Sorcerer's
Stone a movie hit, too. There's talk that Steven Spielberg might
direct. Who'll play the bespectacled wizard boy? Too soon to say.
We're just happy Macaulay Culkin is all grown up.
Kate Winslet virtually
disappeared after her performance in Titanic. What is she up to?
Timothy Ward, Becker, Va.
You'll see her this month in Holy Smoke, but the curvy Brit took
nine months off after her fall 1998 wedding to assistant director
Jim Threapleton, 25. "Jim and I are totally equal in our relationship.
But in certain situations, like when we go out, he wears the trousers,"
says Winslet, 24. "I love that. I love being the wife on his arm."
Winslet loves acting more than cash -- one reason for her film choices.
Of Titanic co-star Leonardo DiCaprio's reported $20 million for
The Beach, she says, "You can feed several small countries with
that kind of money. But if the script was good enough and that was
the fee being offered, yeah, I'd take it."
When will NYPD Blue
be back? I know there was a brouhaha about its Tuesday time slot.
Did it end in cancellation?
Dale Doughan, Des Moines
No. ABC caved to pressure -- star Dennis Franz said the network
had betrayed him -- and put the 6-year-old police drama back in its
comfortable old time slot, Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET, starting next
week. Once and Again, the more fragile fortysomething drama, moves
to Mondays at 10 p.m. ET.
