Last week's Who's News

Who's News

New York Yankees starting shortstop Derek Jeter is such a good role model for kids today. Whom did he look up to when he was a boy?
Heather Tygrett, Charleston, W.Va.

Growing up in Kalamazoo, Mich., Jeter idolized Yankee slugger Dave Winfield, eligible for the Hall of Fame next year. In fact, the David M. Winfield Foundation, which runs an outreach program for city kids, inspired Jeter, 26, to start the Turn 2 Foundation, which fights teen substance abuse. It's headed by Jeter's father, a drug-abuse counselor. "I love to give kids the same opportunity I had," Jeter says. "It starts in the home. My upbringing was like The Cosby Show."

Is Billy Zane still acting? He was great as Kate Winslet's nasty fiancé in Titanic.
Jennifer Smith, Detroit

Yes. Sure, he was easy to overlook as the singing voice of John Rolfe in Disney's 1998 video Pocahontas II (he trained in musical theater), but how did you miss him as a tunic-clad Marc Antony in ABC's 1999 miniseries Cleopatra? You'll soon see Zane, 34, again on TV: Wednesday and Thursday, he stars with Gloria Reuben in Fox's miniseries Sole Survivor; next Sunday on Showtime, he's Jimi Hendrix's business manager in Hendrix. Zane, now in Spain filming the movie Don Juan, was struck by Titanic's lingering effect recently while in Moscow for a film festival: "We were the Beatles when we got off the plane."

What has award-winning country singer LeAnn Rimes been doing lately?
Duane Parks, Fort Myers, Fla.

What hasn't she been doing? Rimes, 18, is busy as ever, despite a strained vocal cord that required three months of summer rest and therapy (a 30-date tour was canceled, but some shows have been rescheduled, starting at month's end). Her latest hit, I Need You, is all over the radio; she has a cameo in Coyote Ugly (she also cut four Diane Warren songs for the soundtrack); and a new CD is due in 2001. Rimes, who lives with her mom in Dallas and L.A., has been under stress since her parents' 1999 divorce. In May, the two women sued Rimes' dad, saying he'd taken millions from her over five years. We're told the dispute soon should be resolved.

Television's Big AffairTune in Sunday at 8 p.m. ET for the 52nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, live on ABC from L.A.'s Shrine Auditorium. The awards show follows a 7 p.m. ET pre-show. Host for the night is an old pro: comedian Garry Shandling, a three-time Grammy Awards host. As usual, NBC leads the pack, with 97 nominations (ER now has been nominated 93 times during its run). See our article this week on
EMMYS ON THE WEB

Host Garry Shandling:
"I see my role as both host and shrink," says Shandling, who won a 1998 Emmy for writing on The Larry Sanders Show. "There'll be some backstage bits and maybe a Survivor sketch." But Shandling enjoys the pressure of the unexpected. No matter how much he pushes the envelope, he tells us, "I don't think they'll take away the Emmy I won." more ...

Stylist Phillip Bloch:
"Celebrities like to do the unpredictable," says Bloch, who believes actors take fashion as seriously at the Emmys as they do at the Oscars. "It's nice to do the reversal and show you are not just your character." When do nominees commit to what they'll wear? In some cases, "the day before or an hour before the show." more ...

Executive Producer Don Mischer
(himself the proud owner of 13 Emmys): Can you produce special moments on live TV? "It's hard to plan," he tells us. "Most powerful moments come from what the winners say." How do you limit speeches? "We do 26 awards over three hours -- more per hour than any [other] show. I send out letters two weeks ahead in which I ask [nominees to] hold remarks to 40 to 45 seconds." more ...

Melissa Rivers, E! fashion Maven:
"At the Emmys, people are a little more daring [than at the Oscars]. TV women tend to be a little sexier." Who will look especially hot? Debra Messing and Sarah Jessica Parker, says Rivers, who'll make a fashion statement herself: She'll be reporting live -- 7 months pregnant with her first baby. "The exciting thing is, suddenly I have cleavage!" more ...

Emmy Nominees to look for on the red carpet
In the running
In the know
Halle Berry
For HBO's Introducing Dorothy Dandridge.
A win (she's up for starring and producing) could help erase that hit-and-run incident last winter.
Hank Azaria
For the ABC movie Tuesdays With Morrie.
He and wife Helen Hunt recently split; she has four Emmys of her own.
Jennifer Aniston
For Friends (it's her first Emmy recognition).
She and Brad Pitt are to make their first major appearance since their July wedding.
Chris Rock
For Chris Rock: Bigger and Blacker and The Chris Rock Show, both on HBO.
He's been nominated 11 times and won three; this year, he's up for five. He's also a presenter.
Billy Crystal
For his hilarious stint as Oscar-show host -- maybe his best ever.
Then again, at 4 hrs., 17 min., it was the longest Oscar show ever. And he already has four Emmys for Oscar hosting or writing.
Michael J. Fox & Tracy Pollan
Fox, for his emotional last season on Spin City; his wife, for her guest spot on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
Fox just signed a $4 million deal to write about life with Parkinson's disease.
