Who's News

Melissa Rivers, with her mother, comedian Joan Rivers, comments on fashion of the famous at all the big award shows. She talks with Jeanne Wright about what we'll see for the Emmys, Sept. 10.

Q. What is the difference between the way stars dress for the Emmys vs. other award shows?
A. I think the Emmys are a little bit more "fun." If you look at the Golden Globes -- that's a very loose show. Everybody is having a good time. People take more risks. The Oscars is so serious. At the Emmys it's sexier; you've got the cleavage and people are a little bit more daring. Like the time Lara Flynn Boyle of "The Practice" wore nude fabric with beading. That one I really remember [being sexy]. The TV women tend to be a little bit sexier, cleavage a little lower, slit in the dress a little bit higher. Actresses dress "vampier" [at the Emmys]. There are all the starlets. At the Oscars everyone is trying to be taken very seriously. Nothing approaches the Grammy's [for daring]. They are wild.

Q. Who's going to be wearing what? Any predictions?
A. No one is going to commit [to a designer] till the very last minute. The ladies who are nominees are having dress after dress thrown at them. Debra Messing is being solicited by everyone [fashion designers] under the sun and she's tall and thin and has a great body and is a nominee [for best actress] on a hit show ["Will & Grace"]. She is going to look fabulous. I guarantee the girls from "Friends" are being overwhelmed; they're all thin and pretty and wear clothes well and are photographed. Sara Jessica Parker -- I guarantee she's going to look amazing. She's gorgeous, she loves clothes, she has fun with clothing. She looked amazing at the Emmys last year in that white cream Richard Tyler at Golden Globes. She's nominated for leading actress; she's going to pull out all the stops this year. I think the two smartest in the business are Camryn Manheim and Courtney Love because they always go to these events to be seen, to be noticed, and they are.

Q. What about the men?
A. Men in television get a little too creative. David Duchovny, until he got married, was a mess. He used to wear insane things. But his wife [Tea Leoni] has so much style and taste. Since they've been together he looks impeccable. I've got to give her the credit. She's done amazing things with him.
