My husband swears
Kiefer Sutherland is from Canada. Is he right?
Cassandra Lempke
Cleveland, N.C.
Sort of. Sutherland, 33, was born in London but tells us he proudly calls himself Canadian because he lived in Toronto for much of his life. (His father, actor Donald Sutherland, is Canadian, born in New Brunswick, and his grandfather was a Saskatchewan premier.) Now he lives in L.A. but spends time in Montana riding and roping horses, even appearing in rodeos. You'll see a lot of him in 2001: He has five movies, including Ring of Fire, in which he plays a young man on the rodeo circuit.
I'm still angry Angelina
Jolie got an Oscar this year for Girl, Interrupted when it
was Winona Ryder who brought it to the screen. Was Ryder upset about
being overlooked?
Eric Marshall
Hammond, Ind.
Ryder was gracious, but Jolie's win had to hurt. It was Ryder,
who turns 29 on the 29th, who saw Girl for the good story it was
and bought the rights to the 1993 book. This just hasn't been Ryder's
year. After the Oscar slight came her split with Matt Damon. Then
her absurd Autumn in New York got a frigid reception. Maybe
this weekend's Lost Souls, in which she plays an exorcist,
will turn things around for her.
Why do celebrities
spend so lavishly on weddings they then want to hide from the public?
And please tell me: What the heck does a $30,000 bridal gown look
like?
Grace Hampton, Burbank, Calif.
Stars throw over-the-top weddings because they love to show off and they have
the cash to do it. Plus, their budgets include items most of us
never think of: $20,000 for fireworks, $80,000 for guest transportation
and lodging. Don't forget security: Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston
paid $100,000 just to ensure fans, paparazzi and a stalker who sneaked
into Pitt's house last year didn't crash their event. As for a $30,000
gown, Rachel Leonard of Bride's tells us it would be handmade
with "real diamonds and pearls and high-quality fabric. It would
fit like a glove."
Last time you wrote
about Atlanta Braves third baseman Chipper Jones, he admitted he
was a terrible husband and had had a baby with another woman. He
recently had yet another baby. With whom? And is he still married?
Minnie Barnett, Monroe, La.
Jones, who underwent a highly publicized divorce from his first wife, is married again and father of a second son, born June 30 and named after Jones' dad, Larry Wayne Jones III. "But call him Trey, please. We liked 'Trey,' for third. My dad is the most influential person in my life and I wanted to honor him." Trey should have a comfortable lifestyle. In August, Jones signed a six-year, $90 million contract, making him the highest-paid player in Braves history.
Like so many other
fans, I'm eager for the next great novel from Clan of the Cave
Bear author Jean Auel. For years she's been saying it's coming.
Please tell us when.
Mary Mitchell, Fort Collins, Colo.
We would if we could, but not even her publisher can. It's been 10 years since
Auel's last book, The Plains of Passage, dazzled readers.
And while she's known for her painstaking research and quirky writing
habits (she works all night and goes to bed at dawn), even she didn't
expect it to take this long. Four years ago, she told us she thought
she'd have the fifth book in her "Earth's Children" series finished
that year. Crown Publishers tells us the author is still working
on that book. Most important, Auel, 64 -- rumored to be ill, depressed
or dead -- is alive, well and writing.
Why was Roseanne's
talk show canceled? What will she do next?
Gloria Kiger, Colliers, W.Va.
"Stay tuned" is all her rep will say about Roseanne's plans. Her
two-year-old show, on which daughters Brandi, Jessica and Jennifer
worked, was never terrific and bit the dust for good last month
because of low ratings; some experts say there's little viewer appetite
left for talk. Not one to go quietly, the 47-year-old mother of
five rejected an offer to pose for Playboy. And she made
a movie, Joe Dirt, with David Spade as Dirt, due next spring.
