Last week's Who's News

Who's News

I like actor Jason Beghe, who I've seen in TV shows like Promised Land and Family Law. What do you know about his personal life?
Norm Miller, Port Charlotte, Fla.

He's longtime friends with X-Files star David Duchovny; they went to the same prep school. He grew up in New York but loves L.A. He has worked with actresses such as Demi Moore, in G.I. Jane, and Christine Lahti, in Chicago Hope, but the actress he goes home to is Angie Beghe. They were wed last winter and have found, to their surprise, that marriage changes things. "We were walking the other way down the aisle, and we both looked at each other and said, 'Man, I don't know what it is, but I feel different.' " Kids, he tells us, are a ways off, but in Monday's Lifetime movie, When Andrew Came Home, he plays a new father dealing with the residual problems of a stepson kidnapped by his biological father.

Does comedian Chris Rock write all his own material? He's wickedly funny.
Daniel Parks, Chicago

Like all the best comedians, he has help. Among his players is Wanda Sykes, a stand-up comedienne, frequent Conan O'Brien guest and actress (a bit part in Nutty Professor II). "Writing for Chris has improved my writing," Sykes tells us. "You work harder because he's so smart and funny." Reality is inspiring, she says. "A lot of bits we do are born from what's going on today: politics, some huge court case." Sykes is the proud owner of an Emmy for her writing with Rock. How did it feel to win? "I was an emotional wreck. Looking at the guys I work with, I knew they wanted to cry, so I just said, 'I'm gonna cry for everybody,' and I just let it go."

We watched Weather Channel meteorologists Kim Perez and Sharon Resultan go through nine months of pregnancy, take maternity leave and return to work. Tell us about their kids.
B. Kelly, Ocean City, N.J.

Resultan, 35, has the newer baby, a daughter born last May to join her 3-year-old brother. "He visits the studio and remembers you have to be very quiet," says Resultan, who describes her children as a "wonderful blend" of her and her Philippine husband. Perez, 38, has a 2-year-old son whom she confesses to calling her "mini-hubby" because he looks just like his Colombian father. Perez says her son wants to see her on TV. "He goes up to the TV and hugs it and kisses me there."

I see Delta Burke has a new sitcom this season. It's been years since she's been on TV regularly, and there have been rumors that she was either pregnant or near divorce.
Rose Munson, Corte Madera, Calif.

Burke, 44, was neither pregnant nor near divorce, but she did have to fight diabetes. As a result, she dropped 65 pounds and looks trim playing the first lady in her new sitcom, DAG, premiering Tuesday. She has been busy designing clothes for full-size women (she once hit 215), and though she no longer fits in them, she won't give it up: "I lived the life. And the [customers] have been cool."

How much longer will ABC allow new announcer Dennis Miller to ruin Monday Night Football? I say: Give him the hook.
Dee Gamez, Springville, Calif.

You may not like him, but critics are warming to the quick-witted comedian, who grew up in Pittsburgh when the Steelers ruled. And though Miller, a married father of two who turns 47 Friday, has had little effect on the ratings, he's attracting interest and publicity, which ABC wants. If his cultural references get a bit too obscure, go to Britannica.com, where they are explained Tuesday mornings.

Which government jobs are affected when a different political party gains the office of the president?
George Sutton, Hamilton, Ohio

New presidents of either party may appoint their own people; at stake are 3,057 jobs filled by folks who serve "at the pleasure of the president." Neither George W. Bush nor Al Gore will say whether he'll ask for resignations, but it's been done. There will be time for job hunting, though. The appointment process is excruciatingly slow.
