Who's News

For all the money they spend to look their best, Hollywood stars often pull some major faux pas in the hairstyle department. Some need to tone it down, some need to look their age, and a few just don't get it at all. Enter: "People" West Coast Style Editor and "Today" show Style Correspondent Steven Cojocaru, ready to dish the cold, hard truth plus give some friendly advice. Here he shares his opinion of many current coiffures.

Q: We've heard from a number of readers about "Wheel of Fortune" letter turner Vanna White's hair and it's not because they like it. What's going on there?
A: Vanna has been on the show for nearly 20 years. That's two decades of hot rollers and hair spraybeating one's hair into submission. While a television career begins and ends with hair, I ask the American public to cut Vanna some slack -- she's a mom now. But how one cannot prioritize their hair escapes me!

Q: In your opinion, who in Hollywood is sporting a bad do these days?
A: I thought that Jennifer Lopez at the premiere of "Angel Eyes" looked like Shirley Temple meets Moe, Curly and Frizzy. Don't get me wrong, she's a style-setter and isn't afraid to try new things. She's not cookie-cutter Hollywood and I really like that. But this one didn't work for me. It was really off. It was straight out of a comedy store -- the big hair and gold chains. It looked like your worst perm nightmare. Also, I worship at the altar of Goldie Hawn. But the hairdressers and pundits in Hollywood have been talking and everyone thinks her hair is tired already. Heather Locklear meets Farrah Fawcett needs to be retired. I think Goldie should do the unexpected and get a haircut!

Q: Who in your opinion is looking great with their 'do?
A: I like Courtney Love's hair. Probably nobody else does, but that's the point. It's schizophrenic chic. She's sporting two 'dos at once: a bob on one side; the other is completely crazy, long and on it's way to Rastafarian on the other side. It's a hairstyle that needs a divorce lawyer to navigate and negotiate. It's so Courtney Love -- she's a walking exclamation mark. It suits her 'cause she's wild.

Q: What about Meg Ryan, whose hair is often referred to as a blond mop in the press?
A: I disagree. I think it's a very expensive blond mop. I's a highly leveraged blond mop. And it's one of the most imitated hairstyles out there. Every girl wants a cut like Meg Ryan. It completely suits her. Jane Fonda looks amazing since she cut hers short [and messy a la Meg]; she looks so much younger. Faye Dunaway and Barbara Walters would look fab with it. It's all [stylist] Sally Hershberger.

Q: Faith Hill, who went short earlier this year, caused a huge outcry by her fans.
A: I cannot talk about Faith Hill's hair any more because I talked about it so much and I feel really bad. (Her hair did buy me a beachfront house. I made so much hay on that bail of hay!) She got it cut just before the American Music Awards and I think she was trying to go for a punk Blondie '80s 'do, but it was more Blondie of Dagwood and Blondie. Both the color and cut were really scary. Everybody went to town on her. But she cleaned it up and looks beautiful. She's a ravishing beauty. Have I sucked up to her enough?

Q: Peter Savic did that cut and he also did Christina Aguilera's hair for the Blockbuster Music Awards.
A: Christina Aguilera's hair will give me a twitch disorder. It's the most trashed and laughed about and gossiped about hair. Those braids she donned [last year] looked like a lahsa apso with rabies. She was trying to do Cleopatra by way of Brooklyn. But she's really young, she's a singer, and this is her playing dress up.

Q: Helena Bonham Carter's hair is always messy and spiky, kind of wild. But we often see her in serious British period pieces.
A: I think that was a cry from her psyche. She was tired of Merchant Ivory hair. It does look like a bird bought a timeshare on her head, but it's good. I love her hair.

Q: Jennifer Aniston has gone on record saying she liked her hair better long. And one stylist has noted that the chopped bob makes her cheekbones look too wide and just isn't flattering.
A: My take is that it's adorable and really cute. Jennifer Aniston's appeal factor is off the charts. I love how accessible she is and the haircut suits her personality. So no, Jennifer, I don't think you've made a mistake.

Q: And what about Rene Russo, who some stylists have criticized for going too short?
A: Flawless. End of story. She's a role model for women of a certain age. She oozes sophistication, class, elegance and she looks her age. Her hair is modern, sleek and chic -- it makes her look young, but not ridiculously youthful. She tears all stupid archaic notions of ageism apart.

Q: One critic mentioned that Harrison Ford's spiky, gelled 'do makes him look like a teenager with his finger in a light socket.
A: No, I don't agree at all. I scoff at that notion. It's amazing. It's rugged, youthful. It completely suits him.

Q: The 1920's soft, hair wave has been popular in Hollywood this year. What's your take on it?
A: It's a theatrical, glamorous look. But, I implore people not to try this at home. It's a style that looks really great on the right person, and really stupid on the wrong person. On Halle Berry in a gown, it's phenomenal. But not on a mom at the PTA meeting.
