If your little trick-or-treaters are too young for the truly terrifying, send them to the "Scary-Tale Patch" at Scary.com.

Forget horror movies. When I was a kid, nothing sent shivers up my spine like creepy urban legends or a spooky story whispered in the dark. So toss out the witch costume and fake blood; for real Halloween thrills, turn down the lights and tell a good, old-fashioned ghost story. You'll find lots online, from classic yarns such as Edgar Allan Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart" to true-life encounters submitted by Web users. But keep in mind that some stories may be too scary for kids, and user-submitted tales may contain inappropriate language or themes.

A few of the better collections:
halloweenghoststories.com Classic poetry and stories, plus urban legends.
www.ghostsource.com The "True Encounters" archive holds hundreds of tales, searchable by country and state.
13thTrack.com Click here for haunted Internet radio broadcasts, with Halloween music and spooky stories.
Scary.com Click on the "Scary-Tale Patch" for kid-friendly tales.
