Valentine's Day means big pressure. Whether you and your significant other are like a couple of hot tomatoes or your romance has gotten as cold as yesterday's mashed potatoes, this is a make-it-or-break-it time of year: A romantic dinner is the obvious choice, but it might be too late to get a reservation at the swankiest place in town. It may be time to (gasp!) get creative.
| If you've had it with boring red roses, roll the dice this year with an alternative gift from Redenvelope.com.

For this, the Web can be a great resource. But surfing for romantic advice on the Net can land you in a nasty part of town. You'll be pretty safe at lovingyou.com (although even here some material on one important aspect of romance is not for kids). Go straight to the Valentine's Day section from the home page. There you'll find Cupid's Checklist. Follow it. Tips 1-3 are about planning your date. Also, read the guides to Staying In or Going Out for some ingenious plans, ranging from simple (an evening picnic on the patio) to extravagant (a ride in a hot-air balloon). Need more? At citysearch.com, type your town into the "Anywhere" box and click Go to find a guide to local events. Each city is different, but you'll find music, theater and more. Or choose Romance to get some inventive ideas that include dining choices and activities that will have your date eating out of your hand (consider escorting her to the mall and letting her shop!).
Of course, the best date in the world can quickly be spoiled by a bad kiss. To brush up, go to Kissing School on the home page at Virtualkiss.com. Oh, and don't show up with the usual bunch of red roses. At Redenvelope.com, click on Valentine's Day for unique alternatives such as a heart-shaped amber necklace or get-lucky dice.
