The best reason yet to work out

A new online fitness event helps you get in shape while raising cash for sick children.

New Year's is traditionally a time when we reflect on ourselves, who we are, how we got here, what we're doing and, most important, where we're going. Many focus inward; others focus outward. In 2003, I'll try to do both.

Resolutions are replete with promises to do what it takes to achieve greater health and happiness. Why not merge your commitment to better health with the ability to enhance the life of someone far less fortunate? My friends at the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the non-profit that grants the wishes of kids with life-threatening illnesses, have devised a brilliant plan to do just that. Check out www.wish.org and tour their impressive "World Wide Workout." It's an interactive, participatory online exercise event. You can hire your own personal "Cyber Trainer" -- over the Internet.

By simply registering online, you'll get a customized workout based on your objectives and current fitness level; a personal fitness homepage and exercise log; weekly progress reports and motivational messages (a successful workout sometimes depends more on motivation and a positive attitude than on the actual physical work!); and a special videotape or DVD with inspiring stories of "Wish Children." You also can enlist sponsors (such as friends and family) to pledge money to Make-A-Wish in support of your exercise regimen.

Many of us have run or walked in 5Ks or 10Ks that raised money for charitable causes. This program is another clever way to help you reach your fitness objectives while simultaneously raising funds for a good cause. I like this program because you can choose your own exercise (swimming, playing basketball, lifting weights, etc.) and participate at a convenient time and place.

The workout starts Jan. 1 and lasts for the month. For some, that might be enough time to make exercise a healthful habit for the whole year. The World Wide Workout may be just what you need to achieve your peak physique!
