Who's News

"What ever happened to ...?"

It's the question I'm most often asked, and it can be one of the most difficult to answer. Readers generally want to know about their favorites -- stars from TV, movies and music whose 15 minutes, months or years have passed. As we close out 2002, I thought I'd catch you up with a few. So what's the latest news about ...

Richard Dean Anderson, of "MacGyver"?
Theresa Jones, Clarksville, Fla.

Still as handsome as his alter-ego, Angus MacGyver, Anderson, 52, is in his sixth season of syndication with the sci-fi hit "Stargate SG-1". He gamely tells us "it's just the venue that's changed," but of course he's nowhere near as high-profile as when "MacGyver" was making the ladies swoon (even Marge Simpson's twin sisters had a thing for him) and beautiful women (Teri Hatcher, Sela Ward) graced his arm. Today, he swears, "I fill my life with other things." First among them is daughter Wylie Quinn, 4, whose mom is Anderson's former longtime girlfriend, Apryl Prose.

Bonnie Franklin, screen mother to Valerie Bertinelli and Mackenzie Phillips on "One Day at a Time"?
Linda Fair, Parksley, Va.

The frank feminist who made single motherhood look doable is married to producer Marvin Minoff, who, with actor and activist Mike Farrell, produced the 1998 Robin Williams movie "Patch Adams". Her CBS sitcom ended in 1984 after nine seasons in the top 20. Since then, Franklin, 58, has starred mainly in regional theater and performed at benefits for organizations she supports. She has been especially active in the fight against AIDS.

Charlie's Angel-turned-novice spy Kate Jackson?
Margie Cooke, Arvada, Colo.

Jackson, 54, has appeared on "Ally McBeal" and in TV movies. Fortunately, she is in good health, having overcome breast cancer in the late '80s, heart surgery in the mid-'90s and three failed marriages. Initially, she underwent cancer treatment in secret, unbeknownst to cast members of her second successful series, "Scarecrow and Mrs. King". Among the bright spots in her life, she adopted son Taylor, 7, in 1995.

Longtime rock and rollers Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band?
Charles Coppess, Portage, Ind.

Seger, 57, has kept a low profile since his 1996 tour for his album "It's a Mystery". Living in Michigan, where people are serious about their sailing, Seger made headlines this year as an amateur, winning a few regional races. Meanwhile, loyal fans are petitioning online to have Seger and his band nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Macho man Gerald McRaney, of "Major Dad"?
Nadine McDonald, Jackson, Tenn.

He was in the first two episodes of this season's medical drama "Presidio Med" and co-starred with wife Delta Burke in "Hansel & Gretel", a limited-release film that may go nationwide soon. McRaney, 55, has starred in TV movies, too, but lately he's been showing interest in politics. He and Burke were guests at the Bush White House, and McRaney, who co-narrated PBS' "American Experience: War Letters" this year, also travels with the USO and was 2002 chairman of the Department of Veterans Affairs' salute to hospitalized veterans.

Grammy-winning '80s rocker Pat Benatar?
Mindy Caringola, Connellsville, Pa.

She has an album, "Girl", due in March and a music video DVD, "Best Shots", coming next summer. Girl, Benatar's first studio album since '97's "Innamorata", follows this year's "Summer Vacation Live" CD and DVD. Benatar and Neil Giraldo -- her husband, guitarist and business partner -- have toured the country every summer for 23 years (17-year-old daughter Haley's band, Glo, was last year's opening act). The rest of the year, Benatar, 49, happily devotes herself to being a full-time mom to her two daughters.

Joe Lando, Jane Seymour's sexy sidekick on "Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman"?
Dee Smith, Topeka, Kan.

Aside from TV movies (check out "Killer Flood" on Pax next year) and a few "Dr. Quinn" reunion specials, Lando, 41, whose long hair was part of his sensual persona, starred in and co-produced the short-lived Fox Family Channel teen drama "Higher Ground". He got married in 1997 and now has two sons, Jack and Christian; a third child is due in April.
