THE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC-USA WEEKEND WORLD QUIZ
with an introduction by Lisa Ling
I don't profess to be an expert in geography; in fact, I know I have a lot to learn. But becoming better versed in the subject has become a mission of mine.
We've all heard the statistics: Americans just don't know their geography. According to a recent National Geographic-Roper survey, more young Americans could name the location featured on TV's "Survivor" than could find Israel on a map. (At least they had heard of the Marquesas Islands, the show's exotic South Pacific locale.)
The truth is that it never has been easier to get to know the world. After all, access to information is available. It's simply a matter of seeking it out.
It's also more important than ever before. As the world globalizes and countries become more reliant on the products and services of other nations, the need for better geographic perspective is essential. It's worth knowing where our troops are being sent, or where SARS outbreaks are cropping up. It's worth knowing that when you report a lost credit card, your call may be routed to a service center in Bangalore or New Delhi, India, where wages are less and people have a satisfactory command of the English language. And it's worth dreaming of far-flung destinations you can visit.
Another thing National Geographic learned in its study is that a person who travels abroad, uses the Internet and gets his or her news from multiple sources is much more likely to know more about the globe.
Personally, enhancing my awareness of geography has made me a much more well-rounded person. I can go into any situation in any country, and my experience is more meaningful (I'm actually writing this in Nepal, where I'm on assignment for my new MSNBC series, National Geographic's Ultimate Explorer). Most important, though, is that it's fun to be enlightened and have my perspective broadened. If you don't know where you are, how will you know where you're going?
