Who's News

Put an end to this disagreement, please. I know I've read that Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are fraternal twins. My roommate insists they are identical.
Laura Tubbs, East Lansing, Mich.

You win. The teen moguls are fraternals, and age (they turned 17 in June) is making it easier to tell them apart. Ashley, at 5-foot-2, is an inch taller than Mary-Kate and has blonder hair, at least for the moment. Each has her own sense of style, and there's no dressing alike. They're inseparable, though. They'll finish high school together this academic year and will apply to the same colleges, with hopes of acceptance at one in the East. What institution wouldn't want them? Their brand of fashion, makeup and entertainment products, including dolls, books, CDs, games and videos, is expected to bring in $1.2 billion this year alone. And that doesn't count what the girls make for movies such as "New York Minute". In that action comedy, expected next spring, they play sisters who are very different from each other.

Where did sports-talk host Jim Rome go to college?
Eric Fletcher, Redding, Calif.

At a lovely oceanside school, the University of California, Santa Barbara, from which he graduated in 1987 with a communications degree and a lot of college radio experience. The new "Rome Is Burning" on ESPN marks his return to the network; he also does nightly commentary on "SportsCenter" and writes a column for ESPN.com. As if that weren't enough, Rome, who's married and has a young son, continues his wild and crazy syndicated sports radio talk show, now in 200 markets.

Christopher Masterson of "Malcolm in the Middle" and Danny Masterson of "That '70s Show" look so much alike. Are they related?
Lisa Antognoli, Asheville, N.C.

They're brothers. Danny is 27; Christopher, 23. Christopher lives full time in Hollywood, but Danny, who began modeling and appearing in commercials as a kid, now divides his time between the West and East coasts. (The brothers are from Long Island, N.Y.) Christopher just finished five weeks' work in Puerto Rico on MTV's musical update of "Wuthering Heights", to air Sept. 4. He returns to "Malcolm" this fall as eldest brother Francis. And Danny will be back as the cool but paranoid Hyde on "That '70s Show". Both Fox sitcoms are headquartered at Radford Studios, but the brothers' schedules usually don't allow them much time to hang out on the lot. After work, however, is a different story.

What do you know about Mark Valley, the handsome new star of Fox's Keen Eddie?
Kristina Lee, Sacramento

He's an ex-soap star and Army lieutenant who graduated from West Point and served in the Gulf War. Valley, 38, was stationed in Germany when he was discovered by a Berlin agent and got his first job in a thriller filmed there. Playing Eddie Arlette in the new series comes easily to Valley: "I had auditioned for "NYPD Blue" so many times I had a stock New York detective ready to go." However, because this detective is based in London, Valley spent seven months there filming 13 episodes. Although he hopes "Eddie" returns for a second season, colorful Venice Beach, Calif., where he lives with his cat, Cairo, seems more his style. The never-married actor, who has a daughter, Sherri, 15, is an avid outdoorsman. Latest accomplishment? "I climbed Mount Rainier a few weeks ago."

Jason Ritter, son of TV fave John Ritter, has a good attitude about work. "I'll do anything," he says. Maybe that's how he ended up in a lead role in "Freddy vs. Jason", opening next Friday. "I love leading-man roles, but there are so many interesting characters to play," says the actor, 23, who's also in a new fall CBS drama, "Joan of Arcadia". Ritter says he's trying not to capitalize on his famous last name: "There were times I could have played [his dad's] son, but I've stayed away from that. I love comedy and drama, but comedy makes me more nervous. I'm trying to stay away from sitcoms." Ritter says he doesn't want to lose sight of the reasons he became an actor: "fun and exhilaration." And, of course, the occasional scream.
