TELEVISION

The Weather Channel's J.Lo

She may not have the glitz or Ben, but forecaster Jennifer Lopez thrives in the eye of a different storm.

By Vyvyan Lynn

"People look at my ID and ask if I realize my name is Jennifer Lopez!" says the Weather Channel meteorologist who co-hosts "Evening Edition". Although she's not that Jennifer (she doesn't sing, dance or act -- at least not on the air), the J.Lo of Weather plays to the camera whenever radar reveals turbulent weather. "It is my job to calmly keep viewers informed," says the native Floridian, 31, an Atlanta resident who's married, has a year-old daughter and holds degrees in telecommunications and meteorology. We spoke with her:

Has sharing a name with a mega-celebrity helped your career?
"Jennifer Lopez" on top of my résumé has grabbed the attention of a news director or two. It also works out to be a good television name. And, yes, it is my real name. You would not believe how many people have asked me that very question!

Tell us one of the perks.
I always get great restaurant reservations!

This year's bad weather has gotten as much coverage as J.Lo. What's up with it?
Seems the weather is stuck in a nasty rut. People aren't happy, asking if I can do anything about it. Hey, if I could, I'd be living in a much bigger house.

Do you believe any of the old wives' tales about weather prediction?
Not many. When I see a halo around the moon, I believe it will rain. Still, I take a look at the Weather Channel before I tell anyone.

What's your favorite season?
Fall. Temps are comfortable, leaves are changing color, and it's football season. Go, [University of Florida] Gators!

The other J.Lo has a huge wardrobe. What do celeb meteorologists get?
Three umbrellas and a raincoat with paint all over it. I still wonder where the paint came from ...

Tell us a personal story about a memorable weather event.
December 2000, I covered a snowstorm in New York City. This was my first snow experience. We set up in Central Park -- 12 inches fell. The park was breathtaking. However, it was a long day, doing live shots from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. The following day was New Year's Eve, and it took all day to fly home. I rang in the New Year at baggage claim! Glamorous job, right?

OK, maybe it's not as glamorous as the other Jennifer's life. Tell us: What's your favorite J.Lo song?
I have found myself singing "I'm still Jenny from the block. Used to have a little; now I have a lot ..."

Any advice on weather or other matters for her?
J.Lo's career is going great, and she snagged Ben [Affleck], so I don't think she needs advice from me. Although I am asked about her often, I doubt anyone asks her about weather.

Do you have any pull in naming a hurricane Ben?
Sorry. I bet the other J.Lo has more power than I do!
