Who's News

What happened to Tobey Maguire's back during the filming of "Spider-Man" that resulted in rumors he wouldn't do the sequel? How could he do "Seabiscuit" if he was hurt?
Annette Milito, Corunna, Mich.

Don't worry. Maguire, 28, stars in "Spider-Man 2", due July 2. He says the brief brouhaha about his return -- some reports had Jake Gyllenhall stepping into the role -- had to do with whether, thanks to an old back condition, he'd be capable of the demanding stunts. "It's not true I was fired," Maguire says. "Things got blown out of proportion." Nothing he did in the original "Spider-Man" or in "Seabiscuit" hurt his back, Maguire says. To prevent injury, his "Seabiscuit" racing scenes were carefully choreographed. "When I did gallop on a horse, my legs were noodles," he says. "I could barely stand." He can't say enough about the athleticism of real jockeys: "They live on the edge a bit. They put themselves in danger every time they race."

I've heard Jane Fonda has agreed to do a movie with Jennifer Lopez. What's going on with her brother, Peter?
M.A. Williams, Denver

Jane's movie, a romantic comedy in which she plays a nightmarish future mother-in-law to J.Lo's bride-to-be, isn't due until late next year, but her fans are thrilled she's back in the game at age 65. Her last movie was 1990's "Stanley & Iris". Peter, meanwhile, has been working every time he gets a chance. Last month he was in Showtime's "The Maldonado Miracle"; last week his 1971 western "The Hired Hand" got new life, thanks to DVD release. He may live the good life with wife Portia on a ranch in Montana, but Fonda, 64, remains a showbiz man at heart. The star of 1969's seminal "Easy Rider" says: "I've got maybe one more motorcycle movie in me. I think it'd do good business." Sure, if all of us aging boomers bought tickets.

A few minutes with Frances Fisher

At 51, Fisher snagged one of the best parts for women on television this fall: She plays manipulative assistant Brit Hanley on NBC's "The Lyon's Den". Plus, she has a movie ready for release at Christmastime, "House of Sand and Fog".

L.L.: It's terrific to see an "older" woman as a power player in The Lyon's Den's theatrics.

F.F.: There are so many more baby boomers than any other generation now, and we're all in our 40s and 50s. It's not just about youth.

But isn't there pressure to look young no matter what it takes?
You can do a certain amount cosmetically, but if you don't live a healthy life and work on it from the inside, exercise and have a good mental outlook, it's not gonna help you in the long run.

You have a 10-year-old, Francesca, with ex-beau Clint Eastwood. He now has a wife, Dina, and another daughter. How do you make that work?
We all like each other. The kids love each other. It's one of the easiest relationships, because the kids come first and Dina and I are really good friends. There are times I'll call the house and go, "Hey, Clint. How're you doing? Where's Dina?" We're the ones who are making the arrangements.

Is former tennis pro and ESPN commentator Pam Shriver related to Maria Shriver? Also, to whom is Pam Shriver now married?
Sandra Domeier, Boise, Idaho

Pam, 41, and new California first lady Maria, 48 this Thursday, are fourth cousins. Pam, a 1988 Olympic gold medalist, has been married to one-time James Bond George Lazenby, 64 ("On Her Majesty's Secret Service"), since last year; they would like to start a family. Shriver had no kids with first husband Joe Shapiro, who died of cancer in 1999. Lazenby's only son died of a brain tumor in 1994. "On our second date, we got into the grieving process," Shriver tells us. "That brought us closer." Shriver will report from the Women's Tennis Association Tour championships, starting Wednesday in L.A.

How did each of the Fab 5 on Bravo's Queer Eye for the Straight Guy develop his expertise? Where did each come from?
Elizabeth Estada, Nashville

OK, here goes. A who's who, as pictured, from left: Food and wine connoisseur Ted Allen, 38, is from Carmel, Ind., where at age 11 he took over the family kitchen to cook pizza -- and found his calling. Native New Yorker Jai Rodriguez, 24, the culture guy, is an actor-singer-dancer who performs in clubs and has made many commercials. Clothing maven Carson Kressley, 34, from Allentown, Pa., developed his penchant for fashion when, at age 10, he helped his sister pick out a prom dress. He has degrees in finance and fine art and has worked for Ralph Lauren. Decorator Thom Filicia, 34, began with his bedroom in Syracuse, N.Y., at age 7. He has a B.A. in interior design and has his own Manhattan design firm. Grooming guru Kyan Douglas, 33, is from Tallahassee, Fla. He's a hairstylist who has worked professionally in a Manhattan studio.

Jason Priestley is lucky to be alive. After an August 2002 car-racing accident that left him battered to the bone (a concussion and broken back, nose, cheekbone and feet), the former heartthrob of "Beverly Hills, 90210" feels recovered. That's after months of surgeries and physical therapy, plus plenty of moments when he wondered if he'd ever act again. He's onscreen now in the campy comedy "Die Mommie Die", which he filmed before the accident. But he worked this summer making a movie for Canadian TV. Priestley, 34, says he's rethinking his passions, at least the one for race-car driving. "The guys who put my spine back together did it so I could race cars again, so maybe this winter I'll do a little testing," he tells us. "I'm not sure what the lingering effects will be. I have to weigh a lot of things."
