Who's News

Please tell us something about Regina Lasko, David Letterman's girlfriend and the mother of his baby son.

Jean Runberg, Ukiah, Calif.

Little is known about Regina Lasko, a TV production manager who once worked on Letterman's show and with whom he's been involved for about 10 years. She gave birth to baby Harry Joseph on Nov. 3. Letterman, 56, and Lasko, 43, may or may not be married; he wouldn't confirm rumors they've wed. For a guy who makes his living asking personal questions of celebrities, Letterman plays his own cards close to his chest.

You knew it was too good to be true. Harry Connick Jr., who originally was signed to play Debra Messing's laid-back husband, Leo, on six episodes of "Will & Grace," had to go back to his "day job" after about 20. When we talked, Connick, 36, didn't know how writers would "get rid of me," and he had nothing but praise for the cast, but music called. Connick, you'll recall, is a crooner, and on Thanksgiving night NBC showcases that side of him in a concert of holiday favorites, many from his new Christmas CD. You can bet the Connick home in suburban New York is filled with holiday spirit, thanks to three girls, ages 7, 6 and 1. Connick and wife Jill, a former Victoria's Secret model, find "Santa is pretty frugal. We have a lot of family, and otherwise we'd be opening presents all night."

Why is "Miss Match's" Alicia Silverstone merely playing an older version of the high school busybody, Cher, she played in "Clueless?"

Don Shoemaker, Lenoir, N.C.

Because she's so good at it, says "Miss Match" co-creator Jeff Rake, who wrote the part of Kate Fox with Silverstone, 27 -- and Cher -- in mind. "Alicia showed her ability to play a character who can't help but engage in other people's lives," says Rake, whose partner is "Sex and the City" creator Darren Star. "And that's what we needed for this show: someone assertive, but charming enough to make it believable." Unfortunately, despite Silverstone's believability and considerable charm, the NBC dramedy struggled against CBS' surprise hit "Joan of Arcadia" at 8 p.m. ET Fridays; last month, NBC moved "Miss Match" to 9 p.m. Fridays and, at press time, had no plans to move it again.

George Gore II, who plays Damon Wayans' son, Junior, on ABC's "My Wife and Kids," wants to be a rich man, which is not likely to be the fate of his dimwitted character, a soon-to-be teen father. During breaks from taping, Gore, 20, glances at The Wall Street Journal and flips through The Robb Report, "the magazine for rich people," while chatting on his cellphone. "I like to think of myself as multifaceted and broaden my horizons," he says. When it comes to investments, he certainly sounds like he knows his stuff: "It's all about riding out the wave you're in, a high wave or a low wave." At one time he thought he'd study finance at Howard University in Washington, D.C., but now, "I've come to realize people go to college to get jobs. I have one."

A few months ago, I met "Without a Trace" actor Eric Close in Lake Arrowhead, Calif. Is he really as nice as he seemed?

Gary Leeper, Oceanside, Calif.

Yes. And Close, 36, is a believer in fate. "You never know who you are going to meet and what kind of door will open," he says. "For example, I was in Vienna in '87, and I walked up to two guys and started talking to them, because I thought they might be from America. We exchanged phone numbers after a couple of days of hanging out, and a few years later one of those guys invited me to his wedding, and that's where I met my wife." The Closes now have two daughters, 5 and 2 1/2.

Sam Rockwell has given some fine performances in movies such as the recent "Matchstick Men." I'd like to know more. Is he married? What's his next movie?

Hope Knox, Tempe, Ariz.

Rockwell, who is single, will be seen next year in "Piccadilly Jim," about a Depression-era bad boy who meets his female match and falls in love. A northern California native who began acting while still in high school, Rockwell, 35, is drawn to quirky movies like the studio misfire "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" and the surprisingly short-lived "Matchstick Men" with Nic Cage.
