Who's News

Gwyneth Paltrow has been my favorite actress for years. Why did she start her macrobiotic diet? Is she still following it since the birth of Apple four months ago? Also, what is her workout routine?
Suzan Green, Broomfield, Colo.

Paltrow went on her macrobiotic diet because she wanted to eat healthfully (the diet is heavy on veggies, grains, beans, soup and fish). She still follows some of the macrobiotic principles, but we're told she's not as strict as she once was. As for exercise, the 31-year-old Academy Award winner continues to practice her beloved yoga and is trying to squeeze in some Pilates between baby feedings.

Do you think the single Tom Cruise is trying to get back together with ex-wife Nicole Kidman? Would she be interested in him again?
Norma Spitzer, Lancaster, Ohio

I don't think either is interested in renewing their romance, no matter how good a story we all think it would be. They've moved on in that department, staying connected as friends because of their two kids. As you know, her career has taken off since their divorce, and "Collateral" shows he has as much bankability as ever.

I don't get the big fuss over Donald Trump's hair. I recall a very similar style 15 years ago, and I think it looks fine.
Tricia Marrapodi, Tucson

Trump is so hot again, even his outdated 'do can't get in his way. "He's got a babe on his arm, he's worth billions, and he employs a lot of people," says Hollywood stylist Jonathan Antin, star of Bravo's reality show "Blow Out." He compares Trump to Samson: "If it works for him, more of us should believe in it." Antin tells us Trump's style helps him. "If he looked like Bill Gates, there'd be nothing to look at or talk about." Still, should Trump make a change? "I wouldn't mind seeing him try something new, but it's like the old saying: If it works, don't fix it."

Why do so many good TV programs, such as "CSI," shoot most scenes in the dark? My family doesn't enjoy watching shows when we can't see faces clearly.
Larry Schwartz, Phoenix

Blame filmmakers. More shows are being made by producers or directors from the movies (like "CSI's" Jerry Bruckheimer). Before "CSI," "the only TV show that looked as good as a movie was The 'X-Files,"" says Danny Cannon, the man responsible for the looks of all the "CSIs." Now all shows want "contrast, depth and scope," he says. Cannon tells us more people have home theaters, wide-screen TVs, good speakers: "If we helped bring that movie experience into the living room, I'm pleased."

Tony Danza steps into the competitive daytime talk show arena Monday with the plans of a cautious man. "You gotta have the big guests, and we'll fight for them," he says. "But I also want to go off the beaten path." Because the show's in New York, Danza, 53, who lived in L.A. for 26 years, has returned to his roots. "My father was a garbage man for the city, and I'm going back to do a live show. I'm a little bit of the American dream. I only wish my parents [who are dead] could see it." In fact, he recently took his family to Sicily, where his mom was born. There, he found "laughs, rest and a little inspiration -- [what] I'd like the show to be."

Playwright Sam Shepard writes about alcoholism with such truth. Is he writing from his own experience?
Ellie La Chapelle, Globe, Ariz.

Yes. The Pulitzer Prize winner and Academy Award-nominated actor (recently in "The Notebook") has been open about his father's alcoholism, which destroyed his parents' marriage and ultimately killed his dad (leaving a bar drunk, he was run over by a car). It explains why themes of betrayal, alcoholism, and fathers and sons are so prevalent in Shepard's work.

Your July 23-25 column wrongly said former "Saturday Night Live" player Chris Kattan was to star in Broadway's newest musical, The Frogs. Kattan was replaced by Roger Bart. Why?
Katelynn LaRoche, Milton, N.H.

Kattan was dropped in early July, after performing in previews and after our page went to press. A rep for the play tells us it "just was not working out" with the Broadway newbie in the pivotal role of Nathan Lane's sidekick. Kattan's rep says the actor was unhappy because Lane, who adapted the script, had cut some of his funniest lines. Kattan's back in Los Angeles now and has a TV deal with Fox.

When Barbra Streisand was featured on "Inside the Actors Studio," husband James Brolin wasn't there. Are they having marital problems?
Mickey Gallaugher, Walnut Creek, Calif.

No. At the time of that taping, Brolin, 64, was in Montreal filming the controversial miniseries "The Reagans." He regularly accompanies his "Beezer" to functions like the John Kerry fundraiser in June where Streisand and Neil Diamond performed their old hit "You Don't Bring Me Flowers." I'd look for him to escort his wife, 62, to the premiere of "Meet the Fockers," a sequel to 2000's "Meet the Parents." She plays Ben Stiller's mom.

Michael Moore's last two films -- "Fahrenheit 9/11" and "Bowling for Columbine" -- did well for documentaries, and both bash President Bush. What topics will Moore explore if John Kerry wins the election this year?
Kierstin Iverson, Ogden, Utah

Next up for the populist agitator is "Sicko," about America's HMOs and pharmaceutical companies, due in 2006. But if Kerry wins in November, Moore has said, he'll watch the Democrat as vigorously as he has Bush: "If Kerry's president, on Day 2 I'll be on him." Somehow, we doubt it will be with as much fervor.
