Who's News

Does former ER nurse Julianna Margulies have anything new coming up? Also, does she have a family?
Rachael Baker, Indianapolis

Margulies, 38 and single (she broke up with longtime love Ron Eldard), had TNT's six-episode "The Grid" this summer, which did well enough to spark talk about carrying it on. She makes interesting choices, and she has a TV movie and an indie film in the pipeline ... but we expected bigger things after "ER."

I'm a fan of Bruce Springsteen, but when I wrote to him in care of his record label, my letter came back "refused," and I felt rejected. Why would they treat admirers that way? How does one write to him?
Joyce Hutsell, Groom, Texas

Rejecting fans is never a good idea, even when you are as big as the Boss, who turns 55 Thursday. It took a while, but we finally got a proper address from his publicist. She assures us mail sent to "Bruce Springsteen, in care of Columbia Records (Sony Music), 550 Madison Ave., New York, N.Y. 10022" gets passed to his managers. How much of it the Boss reads, we can't say.

I'm paging through Samantha Ettus' new book, "The Experts' Guide to 100 Things Everyone Should Know How to Do," looking for names. There's Larry King on listening, Bobby Flay on barbecuing and, yum, Mrs. Fields on baking cookies. Interestingly, I'm more fascinated by the things I should know how to do, like mow a lawn, or, yes, even flirt. Who knew there were experts on such things? Yet here they are in a brilliant package Ettus, 32, calls her "Cliff Notes" for life. "I'm the kind of person who people think has it all together, but I don't," says the Harvard-educated president of her own brand-management firm. She often found herself wishing for a manual on the right way to do so many things, so she wrote it. I'd tell you more, but I'm reading up on how to kiss.

What do you think about the band Velvet Revolver? And do you know if they'll tour anytime soon?
Matt Pittman, Dyersburg, Tenn.

Velvet Revolver is getting ready to tour the USA from mid-October to December. At press time, no details were set. With its famous lineup -- including former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash, 39, and ex-Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland, 36 (who has struggled with drugs and is on probation for an October DUI) -- VR's rough indie rock sound suits a post-Nirvana generation. The band has a ready-made base: Its first CD, "Contraband," with hit "Slither," debuted in June at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 album chart.

Michael Rispoli is Bernie Mac's sidekick in the new baseball movie Mr. 3000. "I'm his guardian angel and conscience," says Rispoli, who's on a roll; his next movie is "The Weather Man" with Nicolas Cage. Rispoli says Mac has an ear for language and comedy. And as a veteran of 25 movies and 14 TV pilots (his latest, "The Furst Family, for ABC, didn't make a fall schedule), Rispoli knows a good actor when he sees one. He also knows that showbiz demands perseverance and an ability to center yourself: "It constantly feels like you're either adrift or you're in the storm, having to batten down the hatches." This fall, at least, Rispoli has some smooth sailing.

Jeffrey Tambor has theories about his Emmy nod as best supporting actor in a comedy series. "Maybe because I wear orange [his character's prison jumpsuit], the [TV] Academy is responding to color," laughs Fox's "Arrested Development" star. "Or since I have the smallest role, they were saying, 'Keep it small.' " Whatever the reason, Tambor, 60, dreads Sunday's ceremonies in Los Angeles "because if you're not a winner, by default you're a loser." He takes inspiration, oddly enough, from cooking shows. "I don't cook, but there's something about watching a chef put the ingredients together ... that flashpoint, exactly like an actor comes to, when it all comes together."

How many children does singer Reba McEntire have? My husband claims she had three with her first husband but left them for her career. I say she has one son with her present husband.
Tristan Horsley, Boise

You win. Shelby, now 14, is her one and only. Maybe your husband confused the fact McEntire has three stepchildren, the children of current husband Narvel Blackstock.

What is "Angel" star David Boreanaz doing now that the show has aired its last episode? Rumor has it there will be TV movies coming soon. True?
Sharan Shokar, Canton, Mich.

No. Boreanaz, 35, tells us the only "Angel" movies he'll consider will be for the big screen. "The bar would have to be risen for me, personally," he says. Meanwhile, he has finished the big-screen romantic comedy "Mr. Fix It," and he's enjoying free time. "I love the fact that I can work out every day, get back into [abstract] painting and photography [and] hold my son a little longer," says Boreanaz of 2-year-old Jaden (with wife-actress Jaime Bergman).
