20 YEARS OF
USA WEEKEND

1985 one more time

By Michele Hatty

We aren't the only ones looking back to 1985. This fall, the quirky rock band Bowling for Soup scored a top-10 hit with 1985, a song that playfully mocks a modern-day soccer mom who longs to return to the year when "The Breakfast Club" was on the big screen, George Michael was still half of Wham! and Whitesnake's videos ruled MTV.

In '85, the members of Bowling for Soup were kids in Wichita Falls, Texas. Their latest CD is "A Hangover You Don't Deserve."

We asked the Denton, Texas-based band to write a new verse and chorus for the song exclusively for the readers of USA WEEKEND Magazine. Lead singer Jaret, 32, was quick to agree. It was a year that sticks in people's minds, says the singer, who now goes by one name (like '80s icon Madonna). "Every time you hear 'The Power of Love' by Huey Lewis, you know you were singing that song with your friends in your parents' car," he says. "It was a really influential time."

1985 (Take 2) by Bowling for Soup
Michael J. Fox hit the screen
In a cool DeLore-an
Went back in time because
The doc got freakin' shot
Huey Lewis sang the song
And we all sang along
"Back to the Futur-a"
The same year, as the, first Wrestlemania
Pound Puppies, My Buddy, a western by McMurtry
There was Reagan, and Gorby and Sable built by Mercury
Coke Classic, was back with, some cherry and without it
But New Coke would not survive
