Top 10 song lyrics of this generation
Favorite lyrics of the past 13 years in no particular order
-- By Frappa Stout
Family Affair, lyrics
Mary J. Blige (from "No More Drama," 2002)
"Billboard's" co-executive editor Tamara Conniff says: "It's a Girls Just Want to Have Fun" song. She plays with the slang: 'Don't need no hateration, holleratin' in this dance for me.' She makes street talk poetic."
Fallin', lyrics
Alicia Keys (from "Songs in A Minor," 2001)
Billboard.com editor Barry Jeckell says: "Alicia is so hot because she gets easily in touch with her emotions. Here, she battles with love; it's not that typical, movie-love thing. 'Sometimes I feel good/At times I feel used.' "
Smooth, lyrics
Santana featuring Rob Thomas (from "Supernatural," 1999)
Conniff says: "It's very sexy. It almost reminds me of a tango, the way the words fit together."
Hey Ya!, lyrics
Outkast (from "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below," 2003)
Jeckell says: "At one point, he says, 'Y'all don't want me here, you just wanna dance.' He talks directly to the listener, which is a great technique."
Missing, lyrics
Everything but the Girl (from "Amplified Heart," 1994)
Jeckell says: "It's literally about one line: 'And I miss you/Like the deserts miss the rain.' The imagery is so vivid, you can build an entire song around it."
Gangsta's Paradise, lyrics
Coolio (from "Gangsta's Paradise," 1995)
Jeckell says: "It's gritty; it's real. He talks about gang violence with such resignation, suburban white kids related to growing up in Compton."
Lose Yourself, lyrics
Eminem (from soundtrack to "8 Mile," 2002)
Jeckell says: "It's his life story, and it's almost better than the movie. He'll say something clever and have a good laugh at himself."
Stay, lyrics
Lisa Loeb & Nine Stories (from the soundtrack for "Reality Bites," 1994)
Jeckell says: "I love that she's just rambling, because that's how arguments happen: You don't sit down and script it."
No Scrubs, lyrics
TLC (from "FanMail," 1999)
Conniff says: "It's very innovative. They popularized the term 'scrub,' which became a phenomenon."
We Belong Together, lyrics
Mariah Carey (from "The Emancipation of Mimi," 2005)
Jeckell says: "She cleverly brings up listening to other songwriters -- Bobby Womack and Babyface. And you don't expect Mariah Carey to sit around and listen to the radio!"
