Love me, love my dog

Pets put couples to the test.

San Diego couple Deanne Palmer and Aaron Bozzi, both 24, credit their best friends for introducing them. "We started talking when we noticed that Sammy, my mutt, was getting along so well with Lucy, Aaron's black lab," Palmer says. "We ended up using their interest in each other to explore our interest in each other," Bozzi laughs. The two met at a Pupperware party for singles who have pets.

Their story is not a random tale of puppy love. Dating services for people with pets are the latest rage. And when the American Kennel Club recently conducted a survey that asked the question, "Would you date someone who did not like your dog?" 57% of men and a whopping 74% of women barked a resounding "no!" In other words, learn to love my dog, or you will be curbed immediately.

Is this new animal attraction healthy? Not completely. Sure, pets provide an icebreaker and a common bond. But ultimately, it's personal, not canine, compatibility that counts.

Consider this: Some of the kindest, warmest people can be lukewarm around someone's animals because they've never been exposed to pets or because don't want to get attached in case the relationship doesn't work out. I guarantee that if someone is truly into you, he or she will end up wanting to become an integral part of the package deal.
