Special 2006 Emmys Report

What is the deal with Emmy nominations this year? Many nominated shows are already canceled. Why didn't "Lost" or "Desperate Housewives" get major nods? Is there a backlash against shows that are doing well?
Trisha Kudzol, Port Orange, Fla.

If you're a TV fan, don't miss the Emmys on NBC Aug. 27. Start at 7 p.m. ET with the "Access Hollywood" crew catching stars on the red carpet. Stay for the 8 p.m. ceremony, live from L.A., to see who wins.
And read our humorist's take on acceptance speeches.

No. Some popular shows, like those you mention, reportedly did not submit their best work. Nominees are chosen on the basis of one episode, so it's important that what is sent for consideration is compelling. Also, this was the first year for controversial rule changes designed to open up the nomination process. Sadly, Emmy voters still didn't reward my favorite, "Gilmore Girls'" Lauren Graham.

Why do women who attend Hollywood award shows wear such revealing clothes?
Wade Carmen, Cleveland, Tenn.

Because the red carpet is the best place to show off all that hard work they do to keep those bodies in incredible shape. "And like every woman in America," says stylist Robert Verdi, "they look to wear dresses that ... enhance what they love."

The evening's Emcee: Conan O'Brien

Online Bonus Interviews! Conan O'Brien, Lisa Kudrow and Denis Leary

You enjoy hosting the show, don't you?
I do. You've got that big audience full of people who are actually dressed nicely. At my show, people come in wearing tank tops and put their feet up on the rail.

Will you have rules, like no crying in the acceptance speech?
Yeah, there should be rules. I'm tired of people acting shocked. That has got to stop. The most people are allowed to say is, "I had a one in five chance, and it hit."

You got a few nominations for Late Night, but are you disappointed that it did not get one for best hairstyle?
I don't think I would win best hair ... I think I have the best cheekbones or the best beady eyes or thinnest upper lip. If they had categories like that, I would clean house!

Do you get any compensation for hosting the Emmys?
Funny you ask that. I asked [Emmy co-producer] Jeff Ross, "Hey, do I get paid for this?" He just laughed and left the room.

It's disconcerting when a canceled TV show is nominated for several Emmys, but then Lisa Kudrow's HBO series, "The Comeback," never did fit the mold. Kudrow, 43, is up for best actress in a comedy for playing Valerie Cherish, a former TV starlet who agrees to do a reality show to revive her career. Unfortunately, the quirky series, now on DVD, didn't get a second season. HBO wanted it to be a hit quickly, Kudrow says: "We saw Valerie going everywhere and anywhere. But they didn't, and they're a business with concerns way beyond us." Still, says Kudrow, who won an Emmy for "Friends," "it's all sweet -- there's no bitter."

"Rescue Me's" Denis Leary, nominated for best actor in a drama, has been in the business a long time. "I know so many of these actors: James Gandolfini and Hugh Laurie and Marty Sheen. You get excited about [your nomination], then you go, 'Wait, they didn't nominate Jimmy Gandolfini or Hugh,' and then you go, 'I can't even think about this or my head will blow up.' " Leary, 49, says the problem is too many great dramas. In his own family, everyone has favorites (among his: "The Sopranos).

Six degrees of separation, Emmy style

Lisa Kudrow and Conan O'Brien briefly dated.... O'Brien and Denis Leary are distant cousins.... Leary starred in "The Ref" with Judy Davis, nominated for best actress in a miniseries or a movie for "A Little Thing Called Murder".... Davis was in Woody Allen's "Deconstructing Harry" with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, nominated for best actress in a comedy for "The New Adventures of Old Christine".... Louis-Dreyfus was in Allen's "Hannah and Her Sisters" with Julie Kavner, who voices Marge on "The Simpsons," nominated for best animated program less than an hour.... Martin Sheen, nominated for best actor in a drama for "The West Wing," did a guest voice on "The Simpsons." He also is the father of Charlie Sheen, nominated for best actor in a comedy for "Two and a Half Men".... Charlie Sheen was in "Scary Movie 3" with "Entourage's" Jeremy Piven (who absolutely should win as best supporting actor in a comedy).... We could keep going, but then you'd miss the show!
