TRAVEL BRIEFS

Lights! Camera! Vacation!

See locations from your favorite movies without visiting Hollywood.

By Kimberly Lisagor

Hollywood isn't the only place where traveling film buffs can find movie magic. Scenes have been shot all over the United States, and many locations use them to promote tourism. Here are some of those destinations:

Chicago
Sights all over the Windy City have had cameos in films. In "The Break-Up" (2006), Gary (Vince Vaughn) stands up Brooke (Jennifer Aniston) for a concert at the historic Riviera Theatre. The Batmobile zooms down Lower Wacker Drive during a car chase in "Batman Begins" (2005). Onscreenillinois.com offers various tours of the city's many film sites.

Preston, Idaho
The Deseret Industries thrift store in "Napoleon Dynamite" (2004) where Napoleon (Jon Heder) buys his brown suit for the school dance is just down the street from the "Rex Kwon Do" studio where he and his brother take a martial arts class. You can order the "Sweet Map of Napoleon's Preston" from the Preston Chamber of Commerce at prestonidaho.org.

Santa Barbara County, Calif.
From the Sanford Winery where Miles (Paul Giamatti) gives Jack (Thomas Haden Church) a wine-tasting lesson to the A.J. Spurs restaurant where Jack begins his ill-fated tryst with a waitress, Santa Barbara's wine country is brimming with landmarks from "Sideways" (2004). There's even a self-guided tour you can download at santabarbaraca.com; click on "wine country."

Boston
Woody's L Street Tavern is the South Boston dive bar where Will (Matt Damon) tosses back drinks with Chuckie (Ben Affleck) in "Good Will Hunting" (1997). The rugby scene in Martin Scorsese's Oscar contender "The Departed" (2006) was filmed on Boston Common. You'll see both those sites on the Theater-on-Wheels tour offered by Boston Movie Tours at bostonmovietours.net.

Madison County, Iowa
You may recognize the Roseman Covered Bridge from "The Bridges of Madison County" (1995). It's where Robert Kincaid (Clint Eastwood) stops to ask for directions and where Francesca Johnson (Meryl Streep) leaves a note inviting him to dinner. Check out madisoncounty.com/movie.html for a guide to other set locations.
