GARDENSMART

Your own personal paradise

Installing a delightful water garden is easier than you think.

By Fran Sorin

In today's rushed world, where many of us are the stewards of small parcels of land, it's still possible to incorporate a water element into your living space so you can relax, reflect and dream in your own Garden of Paradise. Below are three types of water gardens that will take you anywhere from a minute to a weekend to install.

For instant serenity, just plug in a table fountain.

Table, wall or portable floor fountain
The beauty of portable plug-in water fountains is their ability to instantaneously create a soothing atmosphere. They can be easily found in all price ranges and a variety of themes. Three good sources are serenityhealth.com, smithandhawken.com and target.com. If aquatic plants appeal to you, create your own tabletop garden. Fill a large pasta bowl or galvanized bucket with water, then place an aquatic plant, still in its pot, into the water. Add gravel or small stones to the surface of the soil in the pot to keep the water from becoming cloudy. Get more information on supplies and aquatic plants at lilypons.com.

Container water garden
If you are limited to a small patio or want to avoid construction work, a container water garden is a viable option. It adds elements of both delight and calm, especially in a secluded backyard niche. Imagine yourself after a long day at the office, relaxing in a comfortable outdoor chair, gazing at a magnificently scented, antique-hued pink waterlily. A waterproof container filled with 4 gallons of water works perfectly. Good container choices are wooden or plastic tubs or barrels (mastergardenproducts.com or cleanairgardening.com), a large glazed pot or an old claw-foot bathtub.

Built-in pond
A built-in pond is the ultimate in water gardening and, if done well, can add a stunning dimension to any property. The ideal location is a flat piece of land, not near any tall trees, that receives about six hours of direct sunlight a day.

Spend time learning about the types of plants and fish that will thrive in this environment. Garden centers, nurseries and big-box stores offer extensive products and plant material for water gardens. Check out tricker.com or aquascapes.com.

Start off slowly, adding desired plants as you get the hang of caring for this new type of garden. Most important, remember to plop down in a favorite chair at the end of the day with a cool drink and appreciate your personal paradise.
