Q: How many weeks of vacation do Today show hosts get? Matt Lauer seems to be on vacation once a month, and Meredith Vieira has been off plenty since she got the job. Juanita Ramsey, Crown Point, Ind.
Reps from NBC won't say -- surprise, surprise. I guess they think viewers don't notice. But on her "Today" show blog, Vieira is pretty open about her time away. Since she began the blog in October 2006, she has penciled in about 28 days of vacation time (yes, we counted). Given their years with the network, Al Roker, Ann Curry and Lauer probably get the same, if not more, time off.
For Olivia Newton-John, the holidays mean family. "I get together with my sister," she tells me. "We usually cook the same dishes each year." She also has fond memories of singing Christmas carols around the piano with her father. So it's fitting that she has recorded holiday albums. Her second, "Christmas Wish," is out this year. Along with traditional carols are new songs with guest vocalists Barry Manilow, Jon Secada and Michael McDonald. Newton-John, 59, is a breast cancer survivor who is passionate about women's health. Women put themselves second, she says, but "without you, nothing is going to happen."
Q: CBS' new drama "Moonlight" didn't get much attention when the new season launched. I really like the star. Tina Montiel, Sun City, Ariz.
You're not the only one who appreciates Alex O'Loughlin. The 31-year-old Aussie tried out for James Bond, which ultimately went to Daniel Craig. "I wasn't ready," he says. "In five years, I'll be a great Bond." O'Loughlin, whose girlfriend is Australian singer and actress Holly Valance, was in FX's "The Shield." He says that Hollywood is filled with Aussies because Down Under "there's not enough work to sustain us all."
Megyn Price, 36, plays married with no children on CBS' "Rules of Engagement," but in real life she's a new mom -- daughter Grace is 5 months -- and she's loving every second. On TV she's a New York working woman who has a lovable lug of a husband. At home she lives a suburban L.A. life and is married to an ER doctor. The interesting thing is, she might have been a journalist. A graduate of Stanford, she thought that was the path she would take until "a friend told me I was happiest when I was acting." And that she is, although at press time, the writers' strike meant she wasn't actually working. Of course, Price was hoping that the strike wouldn't last long, but "I'll look at it as some maternity leave," she says.
Q: Why did Mandy Patinkin leave the CBS series "Criminal Minds"? He was so good and brought a deeper understanding of the criminal mind to the show. V. Brown, Burlington, Vt.
CBS said he had personal reasons. Patinkin, 55, called it "creative differences." The reality is, Patinkin, not CBS, wanted to end the relationship. Joe Mantegna now ably fills Patinkin's shoes.
John Cusimano, aka Rachael Ray's husband, has been lead singer of the Cringe since 2004 -- this variation, that is. The name of the band originated in high school, when "we weren't very good, so people cringed when they heard us," he tells us. With a second CD out earlier this year and a tour behind them, this band has worked out cringe-inducing problems. Cusimano, 40, writes all the songs, including "Burn," a track inspired by his wife: "It's about the burning desire I have for her."
