5 things you need to know about |
Online dating
1. Research dating websites. There are big ones (Match.com, eHarmony.com), but also tons of niche sites. "If you are Greek Orthodox, vegetarian or an Ivy Leaguer, there's a site for you," says Paulette Kouffman Sherman, author of the recent book "Dating From the Inside Out."
2. Be honest. Develop a profile that is marketable and reflects who you really are. Judy Kuriansky, author of "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Dating," suggests reviewing it with friends before posting: "They can help you strike the right balance."
3. Make an effort. "Women, especially, sit back and let others come to them," Sherman says. "Don't be afraid to make the first move. When you find someone, send a short note that says, 'I really enjoyed your profile. I think we have some things in common.' Keep it simple."
4. Get over "No." "Don't let it get in your head," Sherman says. "Remind yourself they're not the right person for you." Contacted by someone who doesn't interest you? Think about why that is. Unless there is a deal-breaker in the profile, give that person a chance. "A lot of times, people can be more interesting than their profile," Sherman says.
5. Wait before meeting in person. Chat on the phone at least several times, and always meet in a public place.
