How to DVR more
Most cable and satellite boxes come with built-in digital video recorders that let you record and play back what's on TV. But there's a limit, and you might not realize it until after your hubby records over your classic "Oprah" episodes with a "Battlestar Galactica" marathon.
But it's easy to triple your capacity with a data storage box, like the DVR Expander drive ($189.95, iomega.com). The size of a hardcover book, it comes with 500 gigabytes of memory -- good for 300 extra hours of standard-definition programming or 60 in high definition. It's compatible with Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300, used by major cable providers. Setup is simple and won't give technophobes hives. Western Digital (wdc.com) has a similar box and price.
For the serious couch potato, the DVR Xpander ($269, apricorn.com) comes with up to 1 terabyte of memory. That's 562 hours of standard-def TV. If you want more, you don't need a DVR, you need a life!
