Use miles for a hotel
Many frequent-flier programs let you exchange miles for hotel stays. It's a good deal because lodging can cost as much, if not more, than an airline ticket. Warning: Exchanges vary widely. Examples:
Each American Airlines AAdvantage mile is worth two points in the Hilton HHonors program. So 25,000 miles equals 50,000 points. You can get a one-night stay at the lowest level of Hilton properties for as little as 7,500 points.
If you try to convert 25,000 Continental OnePass miles to Hilton HHonors, you'll find there's no direct transfer. Instead, you'll have to transfer miles to another program, like Amtrak Guest Rewards, then shift them to Hilton HHonors, where you'd finally get 50,000 points.
