Timing saves on Thanksgiving airfare
Planning to fly home for Thanksgiving? You might be in for sticker shock, says Rick Seaney, CEO of FareCompare.com: "Thanksgiving prices are trending about 35% higher than last year, with very sharp rises in non-stop travel."
Timing your departure and arrival is the key to a better deal.
The best days? The cheapest is typically Thanksgiving Day itself, along with the Saturday and Tuesday before, and the Saturday and Tuesday after.
The most expensive? That includes the Sunday, Monday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving, and the Friday and Sunday after. Seaney advises going on the first flight of the day or the first flight after lunch or dinner because these flights are usually cheaper.
His bonus tip: Avoid connecting flights in popular transit cities like New York, Chicago and Atlanta.
