Turns out, fat is not the enemy. Certain types of fats are essential to maintaining your health and can even help you lose weight.
"Omega-3 fatty acids are gaining popularity with those looking to lose weight while attaining optimal health," says Jade Beutler, co-author of "Understanding Fats & Oils." "The latest research has revealed numerous slimming secrets that are attributed to omega-3s."
In one study, overweight dieters who included omega-3s in their eating plan lost 2 pounds or more monthly, compared with control subjects. Omega-3s also have been shown to help control appetite, increase "good" HDL cholesterol and lower blood pressure.
Good sources of omega-3 fatty acids are salmon, walnuts and soybeans, or look for liquidor capsule supplements derived from fish oil or flaxseed oil. Beutler recommends 2 to 3 grams of fish oil or 1 to 2 tablespoons of organic flax-seed oil per day. As always, be sure to consult your doctor before taking any dietary supplements.
