Benefits for caregivers

Are you caring for an aging parent? You may find help from your employer. For years, many companies have offered referral programs and other benefits to assist employees in finding services for aging parents. But now, corporations such as Raytheon, IBM and Nike are offering benefits to support the caregivers themselves.

Ask your benefits department if it offers any of the following:

Seminars on self-care, mastering stress-management techniques and getting emotional support. Family caregivers have a much higher rate of depression than the general population does. These support programs are designed to thwart depression, reduce stress and, of course, raise employee productivity.

Courses on caregiving skills. Learning problem-solving and basic nursing skills helps lessen caregivers' anxiety and makes it easier for them to deal with doctors and other family members.
