Top test-taking tips

Teach your child to scan the test first.

SATs, exams, pop quizzes -- just the words can strike fear in the heart of any student. But "test-taking skills can be learned," says Linda Strean, former managing editor of GreatSchools.net, an education advocacy website. "Parents play a key role." Her top tips that parents can teach their kids:

BEFORE THE TEST
Learn from past mistakes by reviewing old tests.
Know the specifics: the format, the scope of the material, whether you have to show your work for math problems.

DURING THE TEST
Scan it before starting.
Read the questions carefully.
Answer the easiest questions first. Then go back and finish the rest.
First impulses are often right, so don't dwell on any one question.
Use all of your time. If you finish early, check for silly mistakes.
