Time to shape up

Check out these ways to make the most of National Fitness Month.

Hey, couch potatoes! Even a little exercise has benefits.

Summer is just around the corner, so it's fitting that May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. To make the most of it, some good resources can help you improve your health and fitness IQ.

In this magazine alone, Jorge Cruise's FitSmart column as well as the EatSmart column provide great advice for anyone looking for ways to motivate themselves to implement lifestyle changes. Remember, when it comes to achieving fitness, food and activity are two sides of the same coin. For the more committed couch potatoes among you, I wrote the book "Move Yourself: The Cooper Clinic Medical Director's Guide to All the Healing Benefits of Exercise (Even a Little!)" as a handy primer to get you going.

Additionally, websites for groups ranging from the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports (fitness.gov) to the American Heart Association's Start! Walking program (mystartonline.org) may have just the tools you need to get fit.

So take a little time to assess your current exercise and eating habits. If you think your program could be tweaked, what better time than the present to make it happen?

Contributing Editor Tedd Mitchell, M.D., president and CEO of Dallas' Cooper Clinic, writes HealthSmart every week.
