Save on your family reunion
Planning to gather the tribe? Edith Wagner, editor of "Reunions Magazine," has this advice.
Trim food costs. If most folks are local, revive a prized tradition and hold a potluck. (Or do what CookSmart's Pam Anderson does: Appoint a team to jointly plan, shop for and cook the big meal.) If most people are traveling, skip expensive banquet facilities and hire a reasonably priced caterer.
Communicate online. Save on invitations, postage and other mailing costs by using e-mail instead. Or create a Facebook page or other Web page dedicated to the event.
Raise money to offset costs. Some families do this to help out relatives who couldn't otherwise afford to come. Auction off a family heirloom, hold a raffle with donated prizes, or put favorite recipes into a bound cookbook and sell copies.
Make use of free stuff. Canvass family members to see who may be able to donate items for goodie bags. Also, go to reunionsmag.com and click on "free stuff" for ideas.
