First aid, naturally

Banana peels are great for soothingpoison ivy rashes

The return of warm weather also means the return of those annual outdoor ouches. Before applying costly creams or sprays to soothe your bites, rashes and burns, try some of these cheaper and greener first-aid tips from best-selling authors Graham and Rosemary Haley in their book "Haley's Hints Green Edition: 1,000 Great Tips to Save Time, Money and the Planet!"

To soothe sunburn, the Haleys recommend applying a mix of a whipped egg and a teaspoon of castor oil. "Or, add a handful of baking soda to a bathtub of warm water and soak in it for a while."

For those pesky mosquito bites, apply vinegar on a cotton ball to the itchy area.

Beat bee stings by applying a paste of baking soda and water to the affected area.

Reduce discomfort from poison ivy by rubbing the inside of a banana peel on the rash, the Haleys say: "It should reduce the irritation within a few days."
