The key to lasting weight loss

"The Biggest Loser"'s Jillian Michaels tells you how to stay on course.

By Jorge Cruise

Use a journal to help you deal with negative thoughts.

"Fitness is an empowerment tool," says Jillian Michaels, famed fitness coach on NBC's series "The Biggest Loser" and author of, most recently, "Master Your Metabolism." "It gives you knowledge, power, understanding and strength, and being strong physically transcends into every facet of your life."

After working with more than 150 people on The Biggest Loser alone, the trainer, 35, has seen what it takes to truly make a commitment to change. The key to lasting weight loss? "The one [thing] I see with people who stay the course and keep the weight off is they are willing to explore their demons, and they continue to deal with their issues," she says. "Don't run from your problems, because then they grow larger. Examine your issues and see where you can be proactive and change your attitude."

A good place to start is with a journal. Write down any negative thoughts you have about yourself and why you haven't been able to achieve your goals. Learn to let go of these thoughts and create positive ones in their place; remind yourself every day that you are worth the effort. "We're all a work in progress," Michaels adds. "Embrace where you are now and move forward from there."
