Father's Day playbook
As dads (and moms) know, parenting is not an easy job.
"Guys want to be good dads --sometimes, they just need a little help," says Bobby Mercer, author of "Quarterback Dad." He uses a relatable football metaphor to help. Mercer, 48, draws from his experience as a married father of a 4-year-old girl and a high school football coach to offer advice (that also can apply to moms):
Don't pass on changing little ones' diapers. Make it fun by giving tummy raspberries.
Make fatherhood a contact sport. Hug your kids daily. Read, sing and dance with them. You can never spoil a child with too much love.
Keep the romance kicking with your partner. Score an emotional touchdown with a mushy card, a single flower or a racy cellphone message. A healthy relationship makes for healthy kids.
Remember, this is game time. "Promotions, your favorite TV show, that raise will come around again," Mercer says. "Your child will only be this age once."
