Have a river rafting adventure

White-water rafting is a common spring and summer activity on some of America's most beautiful rivers. These adventures can last an afternoon or span a week or more.

Afternoon white-water rafting trips can cost as little as $74.

Maine: Northern Outdoors offers Class II, III and IV rapids (average to difficult) on a daylong trip on the Kennebec River from $74 per person.

West Virginia: The New River has been called the Grand Canyon of the East, and Wildwater Expeditions has a five-hour trip on the Upper New River for $119.

Idaho: ROW Adventures offers one of the classic American rafting itineraries, a six-day camping trip down the Middle Fork of the Salmon River, from $1,765.

Oregon: Outdoor Adventure River Specialists, aka OARS, has departures throughout the West, including a four-day paddle on Oregon's Rogue River from $880.

Alaska: If you have a taste for big adventure, specialized outfitter ROAM -- Rivers, Oceans & Mountains -- offers a $4,995 11-day trip along the Tatshenshini River that may be the ultimate adventure in a land of glaciers, ice floes and grizzly bears.
