Hosting or heading to a holiday cookout this weekend? Use these four tips to eat smart without sacrificing fun or flavor:
Choose healthful sides and condiments, says Chris-tine McKinney, a registered dietitian and diabetes educator at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore. Go for hummus and veggies or a mixed green salad instead of potato or macaroni salad. Use mustard, guacamole and salsa rather than mayonnaise and sour cream.
Keep portions small. Meat should be the size of a deck of cards; fish should be the size of a checkbook.
Be creative. To spice up your meal, go for fajitas or kebabs instead of the typical burger on a bun.
Skip the sugary soda. For a refreshing alternative, experiment with making your own non-alcoholic spritzer by combining seltzer, fruit juice, mint and some fresh berries.
