Taking a class? Get tuition help.
With unemployment rising and industries shrinking, workers find they need to boost skills, retool careers and, in some cases, start over. That's why many people will head back to the classroom this fall -- a smart move. But how to cover those tuition bills?
Many states offer generous grants for retraining and skill-building classes. Go to careeronestop.org, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor, to find links to state programs.
Look for scholarships without age restrictions at sites such as SuperCollege.com and FastWeb.com (free registration required).
Also, check professional organizations in your field of interest. Many of these groups offer scholarships and grants to students who have a passion for that industry. Adult students who have a clear job focus have the advantage here.
If you're employed, see if your company will cover all or part of your costs or whether it has a relationship with a local college or training organization for ongoing staff learning.
