Focus on yourself, TV doc urges
Many people give without taking time for themselves. But "overspending" personal resources such as time and energy can make you stressed, which can lead to heart disease, depression, substance abuse and possibly cancer, says NBC News chief medical editor Nancy Snyderman, M.D. Her practical tips for living a healthier, longer life:
Take time to refocus. Step back and focus on yourself for a moment. This is self-preservation, not selfishness.
Create a pros and cons list about your life. Assess it, then fix the easiest thing first. Ask for help, if you need it, to achieve your goals.
Replace your toothbrush. To stop the spread of germs, discard your brush after an illness, and keep brushes at least an inch apart.
Find exercise you enjoy. Experiment to discover something you love. This could be an activity such as swimming, hiking or even horseback riding.
