Say goodbye to sodas
Stick with water. Diet soda may increase appetite.
|
Drinking sugar-sweetened sodas has been linked to everything from weight gain to heart disease and type-2 diabetes. That's why Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin, best-selling authors of the vegan lifestyle book series Skinny Bitch, suggest this drink is the first thing you should ditch in your diet.
According to the authors, "There's nothing in [sodas] that's good for you. They are filled with artificial flavors, sweeteners and other chemicals."
Freedman goes on to say that drinking diet sodas with artificial sweeteners may increase appetite rather than suppress it. Instead, opt for the good old standby: water. Although recommendations vary, the authors suggest downing eight glasses of water a day. Water, they say, aids digestion, and "it does wonders for your skin, hair and nails."
How about subbing milk for sodas? At least 30 million Americans are lactose intolerant, says the National Institutes of Health, so Barnouin advises sticking with almond, soy or rice milk.
