Free things to do in America's big cities
Some of the best activities in major American cities are free. A few examples:
In Chicago, the National Museum of Mexican Art offers free admission. So does the Lincoln Park Zoo. And for an insider's view of Windy City neighborhoods, the Chicago Greeter program offers free walking tours.
In New York, admission is free on Friday evenings at both the American Folk Art Museum and the adjacent Museum of Modern Art.
In Washington, D.C., all of the Smithsonian museums, such as the National Museum of the American Indian and the National Museum of Natural History, have free admission every day.
In San Francisco, the Cable Car Museum and the Chinatown Night Market Fair have no admission fee. City guides also offer free walking tours of many famous sights and neighborhoods. Don't forget your running shoes so you can jog across the Golden Gate Bridge -- and bring along your camera to capture the amazing views of the city and the bay.
Even Las Vegas has attractions that won't cost you a dime. Watch the Viva Vision light show at the Fremont Street Experience, or visit the Bellagio hotel's Conservatory and Botanical Gardens.
