TRAVELING LIGHT

Nude tourism takes off

THE SKIN GAME: Most popular nude sports, by percentage of nude fun-seekers who regularly take part:
1. Swimming 75%
2. Walking 66%
3. Hiking 35%
4. Cycling 32%
5. Volleyball 27%
With special travel packages for nudists, the uninhibited don't need to tuck much into a suitcase. Nude cruises, resorts and other recreation-related sales account for more than $250 million a year, say industry insiders. The American Association for Nude Recreation is sponsoring a round trip to France Sept. 17-24 for $1,875.

There are niche nudist travel companies as well: Bare Necessities Tour and Travel's Caribbean Millennium Cruise, set to sail Dec. 26, 1999, and return Jan. 2, 2000, is sold out, with more than 150 on the waiting list. Bare Necessities also hosts an annual winter Caribbean cruise with 1,100 passengers in February. Travel Au Naturel presents a Halloween Windjammer cruise out of Grenada.

Monday, the association kicks off Nude Recreation Week with a car show in Union City, Mich.; beach blasts at Lacey, Wash.; and other events around the nation. Favorite nude activities include hiking, cycling, even -- watch that hook! -- fishing.

For more information, contact the association at 1-800-TRY-NUDE or on the Web at www.aanr.com. The association sells special gear, including an item that keeps your car keys while you hang out in the sun: a $19.95 denim baseball cap with a pocket.

BATTER, BATTER, BATTER, SING!

Chicago's smashing lineup

Guest conductors are leading Chicago Cubs fans in singing Take Me Out to the Ballgame in tribute to Cubs broadcaster Harry Caray, who died in February. The hip lineup includes alternative rockers Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins and Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam as well as Hollywood stars Chris O'Donnell and Joan Cusack. To find out who's on deck at the next home game, call 1-773-404-CUBS.
