Message
in a Bottle certainly proved wrong those critics who sounded the
death knell on Kevin Costner's stardom. Is he involved with anyone?
What's next for him?
Jan Dicken, Las Vegas
He's seen at parties from Aspen to New York with gorgeous women,
but there are no girlfriends he'll discuss (and he's still close
to his ex-wife, Cindy, who got $80 million in their divorce). As
for continuing his box-office appeal, the 44-year-old Costner may
hit a homer in August with For the Love of the Game, a baseball
drama that could be autobiographical: He's a pro player in midlife
crisis. Costner has played tons of onscreen ball (Bull Durham,
Field of Dreams), but in real life his sports are hunting, fishing
and mediocre golf.
Catherine
Bell - Lt. "Mac" MacKenzie on JAG - is fabulous. She's the
reason I tune in. Yet I know nothing about her
offscreen life.
Joe Rihel, Butler, Pa.
She's a grown-up tomboy who loves dirt-biking and motorcycling
as much now as she did as a kid. "I have scars all over," Bell tells
us. She's also a romantic who craves the little touches that sustain
love (her ankle sports a heart tattoo). She made the first move
on her husband of five years, actor Adam Beason: "I put my number
in his pocket." An only child who was "too comfortable being alone,"
she's still so close to her mother that they're neighbors. Bell,
30, hopes for kids down the road, as well as a film career.
What
kind of annual income can top figure skaters like Todd Eldredge
expect to make? Many spend thousands on training and give up all
social life.
Sharon Rodriguez, Lees Summit, Mo.
It's not Michael Jordan money ($45 million) and it depends on
many variables, but the low seven figures isn't too much to expect
- and women make more than men. Skating analyst Christine Brennan,
who has written two best sellers on the sport, says athletes the
caliber of Michelle Kwan, the dominant female skater of her generation,
make about $2 million; Eldredge, probably a little less. It pays
to stay athletic: Amateurs make more than those who turn pro.
Tennis
star Andre Agassi and actress Brooke Shields don't make the gossip
columns quite like they did when dating. Are they still happily
married?
Mildred Erskine, Port Orange, Fla.
Yes, although their jobs sometimes have them on opposite sides
of the world. Shields, 32, tapes her NBC sitcom in Los Angeles three
weeks out of four; Agassi, 29, travels year-round to matches. Still,
they make a point of making it work. Sometimes that means putting
datebooks side by side and plotting where to meet. They have two
homes: one in Las Vegas and a $3 million number in L.A.'s posh Pacific
Palisades.
No
offense to Oprah Winfrey, but I liked her buddy Gayle King's talk
show even better and was sorry it got canceled. Any chance she'll
try again? Sylvia Tyler, Livermore, Calif.
She'd love it. The end of The Gayle King Show one month
shy of a season was a disappointment, she tells us, "but there's
no need for a pity party. I'm OK." A busy single mom of two pre-adolescents,
King, 45, also anchors an evening newscast in Hartford, Conn. She
and Oprah started their careers together two decades ago, so King,
who stays in touch with her pal nightly, knows all about the volatility
of the business. "I'm glad I didn't give up my day job," she laughs.
"It's just a crazy business."
House
Manager Lindsey Graham was the only one during the impeachment mess
who didn't look like an old conservative pol. What's his background?
Ellen
Bushnell, Somers, Conn.
He's a young conservative pol whose South Carolina twang, boyish
good looks and single status make him a bachelor to watch around
D.C. Graham reportedly has been dating MSNBC pundit Laura Ingraham,
known for her sharp mind and short skirts. He's 43, a Baptist, a
lawyer and a former Air Force prosecutor. Though he looked to the
nation like a seasoned veteran of political fights, he is relatively
new to Congress, elected in the 1994 GOP Contract With America landslide.
His aggressive impeachment-trial demeanor notwithstanding, Graham
is a man who weighs facts. He once told The New York Times he
thought the president should have talked plainly to the country
on the Lewinsky matter. Of course, had Clinton done so, we might
never have met Graham.
