Where
has the very talented screenwriter and actor Matt Damon been lately?
Gloria Neff,Yuma, Ariz.
He has had his pick of scripts since 1997's Good Will
Hunting and has worked non-stop on films you'll see starting
in the fall. In fact, he hasn't even had a place to call home. One
constant in his life, besides girlfriend Winona Ryder: Ben Affleck,
the best pal with whom he won an Oscar for the Hunting screenplay.
Damon, 28, says honesty is the secret to their 20-year friendship.
Affleck, 26, says they're not competitive. They're writing another
movie, Halfway House, in which they'll both act. This time,
by previous agreement, Affleck gets the flashier part.
How much
of top athletes' income goes to their agents?
Howard Prince, Eau Claire, Wis.
Anywhere from 5 to 15% per deal. A typical NBA agent fee is 4- 5%, but 5% of the $69 million Michael Jordan made in '98 is quite a chunk of change. New trend: no agent. Milwaukee Bucks guard Ray Allen paid Johnnie Cochran $500 an hour to review his contract, saving millions in fees.
Elizabeth
Dole is exploring a run for president. Surely other women could
go for it in 2000. What about three-star Army general Claudia Kennedy?
Anthony DeRibas, Newington, Conn.
Kennedy, 51, has a strong background: The Army's highest-ranking woman, she has a philosophy degree, speaks three languages, has served as the Army's senior intellegence official and is viewed as a possible future member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In addition to Kennedy and Dole, left, these women are White House material: Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.; New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman; and Hillary Clinton, eyeing a New York Senate race.
Please set
the record straight on Michelle Pfeiffer's children. I thought she
had one child with ex-husband Peter Horton; the other, with current
husband David Kelley.
Sally Wood, Lake Katrine, N.Y.
Pfeiffer and Horton were divorced and she was single in 1993 when
she adopted daughter Claudia. Around that time, she met Kelley,
writer-producer of Ally McBeal and The Practice; she
later gave birth to their son, John Henry. "I don't think everyone
feels this," she says of her decision to adopt, "but I felt something
was missing. I'd wanted to be a parent for a long time. There's
no question I'm a more balanced person. My worry is I'll be one
of those mothers where everything will be ripped from under me when
they go off to college." Pfeiffer, 40, says that motherhood affects
"the amount of time I work and where I work, but not the roles I
play." In May, she's in A Midsummer Night's Dream.
Does Mariah
Carey do anything besides get seen at parties? I know she'd like
a movie career, but her love life and lifestyle get all the note.
Robert Hamilton, Simi Valley, Calif.
You can't blame the pop diva for partying. Her defunct four-year marriage to much older Sony Records chief Tommy Mottola sounds like Dullsville. "I missed so much fun," Carey, 30, lamented to Rolling Stone. She lives in Manhattan but had a great time at last month's Oscar soirees in Los Angeles. Her new beau, Latin singer Luis Miguel, wasn't there, but Carey was playful with Jim Carrey, among others. She does have a cameo in The Bachelor, with Chris O'Donnell, this fall.
