Movie stars Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith became parents last
year, but I have yet to see pictures of them with their baby son.
Suzette Williams, Detroit
That's just because he's still so little. You can bet that like Smith's older son -- Trey, 6 -- Jaden, who turned 1 in June, soon will be seen at his dad's big premieres. Jaden is the first baby for the madly-in-love couple; Smith, whose Wild Wild West opened recently, amicably shares custody of Trey with an ex-wife. Jaden began traveling with his devoted parents (who try not to work simultaneously) at about a month old and took his first plane ride to Santa Fe, where Smith filmed West. Smith, 30, always has been an involved father. But he's said the second baby makes him feel like a "real dad."
I think I heard Party
of Five's Scott Wolf say on a TV talk show that he is from my home
state. Can I add him to my list of New Jersey notables?
Dennis Sigrist, Dumont, N.J.
Born in Boston, Wolf grew up in West Orange, N.J., where he dreamed of acting but "never looked at it as a realistic option. I played a lot of sports, though I did little plays at camp." Now 31 and with one year left on his PO5 contract, he's at a crossroads. He hasn't decided if he'll continue. With three films under his belt, including spring's Go, he'd like to focus on movies. He worries about letting success go to his head; that's one reason he hopes to move to New York next year. "I'm confident I won't become a person I don't want to be," Wolf says. "You can drive yourself crazy worrying about it, although I'd rather err on the side of caution. I've learned to set boundaries."
Texas Gov. George
W. Bush has been evasive about his "irresponsible" youth. Will he
be able to get away with that now that he's seriously campaigning?
Steven Bulk, Northtown, Pa.
It's doubtful Bush, or any other candidate, will get a pass if youthful "mistakes" (his word) are substantive. Yet, at press time, the GOP favorite had admitted to nothing more serious than "drinking and carousing." Even digging on the part of such reputable publications as Texas Monthly hasn't turned up much. Still, you can be sure that in the post-Clinton campaign era, every candidate's character will be scrutinized by opponents and the press. Some 200 reporters signed on to follow Bush, 52, into Iowa.
When ice showman
Scott Hamilton announced he had cancer two years ago, fans worldwide
prayed for his recovery. How is he?
Sharon Oyen, Walla Walla, Wash.
The Olympian and skating commentator, 41, tells us he considers his cancer battle over; the problem now is keeping fit. With age, "the body presents new challenges." Yet he's become an advocate for getting information to scared patients. "I didn't know what chemotherapy was till I had it," Hamilton says. When he was diagnosed with testicular cancer, he was afraid, too. "I'm not trying to sugarcoat it. You choose how to deal with it: let it undermine your psyche or understand what's going to happen."
I've admired actress
Susan Sarandon since her breakthrough movie, 1980's Atlantic City.
Does she have a new film keeping her busy?
Albert Marini, Brooklyn, N.Y.
One of America's most accomplished actresses, she went to Cannes this spring promoting Cradle Will Rock, directed by her love, Tim Robbins. And she's in three more movies this fall. The mother of three school-age kids, she's taking the summer off. Her Stepmom co-star Julia Roberts once told us she looks up to Sarandon, 53: "Certainly, she's proof that everything's possible in combination."
I've always loved
Chris Isaak's music, but until I saw him in concert I had no idea
how funny he is or how nice to fans. What else don't I know?
Marsha Miksis, Santa Rosa, Calif.
San Francisco-based Isaak speaks some Japanese and tells us he
has directed a few tourists to the Golden Gate Bridge. He's an ex-boxer
who wants adventure with caution -- "I'm kind of realistic that
I don't want to die." He recently spent five days camping and surfing
with buddies in Alaska. What was missing? "Women." The single Isaak,
43, whose Baby Did a Bad Thing is on the sexy trailer for
Eyes Wide Shut, sneaks into movies. "That's why they make
multiplexes, isn't it? I go in to see one movie and I always try
to see a second one."
