VIDEO
Young Frankenstein (VHS, $14.90; DVD, $29.90), new
in stores
Twenty-five years after its theatrical release, Mel Brooks' hilarious
romp through the horror genre has aged amazingly well. The over-the-top,
quote-worthy performances by Gene Wilder (as Dr. Frederick von Fronck-en-steen)
and Marty Feldman (as I-gor, shown) are unforgettable. Audio commentary
from Brooks himself, outtakes, trailers and a making-of documentary
enhance the DVD version.
MOVIE
The Cider House Rules, opens this weekend in New York
and Los Angeles; nationwide by Jan. 7.
An excellent morality tale of the troubled relationship between
obstetrician/orphanage founder/ether addict/abortionist Wilbur Larch
(Michael Caine) and his favorite orphan, Homer Wells (Tobey Maguire).
Reportedly disappointed with bad film versions of his novels, John
Irving wrote the screenplay this time for his sprawling movable
feast, retaining the integrity of the characters he's so delicately
crocheted. Also stars Charlize Theron as Homer's love, Candy Kendall.
BOOK
Down on the Farm: Barnyard Animals of Note, Dave
Hill (On-All-Fours Publications, $8)
Hill's whimsical fascination with farm animals is contagious, compelling
stuff. Call this coffee-table book/desk reference an ode to livestock.
