For her new reality show, The Price of Beauty (starting Monday at 10 p.m. ET on VH1), Jessica Simpson traveled the globe with her BFFs, hairdresser Ken Paves and gal pal CaCee Cobb. Their mission? To explore a subject the tabloid queen knows all too well: women and their body image.
“We all struggle with the same issues,” says Simpson, 29, whose weight gains and losses often land her on gossip magazine covers. (She declined to tell us how much she weighs.)
During a recent chat, she spoke with us about that, her worst moments and her ex-beau, football star Tony Romo.
Why a show on body image?
In our world today, people often focus on the negative. It’s important to show women who love themselves and know that’s where true happiness and beauty is.
On your website, you say you hate your image as ditsy and dimwitted.
I’m still a silly, goofy girl who has her ditsy moments, but I definitely don’t think I would have made it this far in the world today if I didn’t know what I was doing.
How do you feel whenever you receive any negative press?
I would be lying if I told you that I wasn’t incredibly hurt and that I didn’t have my moments of breaking down.
Did anything from your travels for the show shock you?
In Uganda, we were in a village where the fatter you are, the more beautiful you are. We kept asking women, “How fat is too fat?” And they say, “Well, if you can’t stand up.
Are you more comfortable talking about your own weight fluctuations now?
Absolutely. When all the press was coming out about me and everybody was saying that I had gained weight, I didn’t want to do a sit-down interview and cry and have the whole world feel sorry for me. I wanted to be strong. Hopefully, this show will unite women to feel beautiful and to know that not everyone looks like the cover of a magazine. I don’t look like what I look like on those covers.
Do you want to get married again? [Simpson is divorced from singer Nick Lachey.] Have kids?
Oh, my gosh, are you kidding me? Of course! One thing that’s for certain: Nobody blames Jessica Simpson anymore when Tony Romo plays poorly for the Dallas Cowboys. [Laughs loudly.] I am a die-hard Cowboys fan. Tony is a great guy, and he’s still a friend of mine. I definitely root him on.
Everybody has a Hollywood crush. Who's yours?
I made a fool of myself in front of Johnny Depp. I didn’t know what to say. I introduced myself, then I started rambling, and I just walked off. He was looking at me like I was crazy.
