Who's hot in Hollywood

Anna Gunn moved from Ohio to New Mexico with her family at age 8 and now films the AMC hit show Breaking Bad there. Season 3 begins Sunday, and Gunn says fans will see face-offs between her character, Skyler, and her chemistry teacher/drug kingpin husband, Walt (Bryan Cranston). “It's like playing a great game of tennis,” Gunn, 41, says. “If the person lobs the ball at you, you know you're going to get a good return.”

This month, Anoop Desai releases My Name, his first single since finishing sixth on last year's American Idol. A digital EP, All Is Fair, is due out in May and infuses sitars and tablas into a contemporary R&B sound. “Both of the cultures I consider myself a part of, the South and Indian culture, have rich musical traditions,” says Desai, 23, who's from North Carolina.

Can you tell me more about the mysterious graphics the show Fringe uses before commercials?

Those glyphs, including flowers, frogs and hands, are extra puzzles for followers of the Fox show, which returns with new episodes April 1. “It’s really a sense of fun for the dedicated,” executive producer J.H. Wyman says, adding that the symbols also show up in plot points and scenic backgrounds. “Since we’re moving toward heavier mythology episodes, [viewers are] anxious for clues to where we may be going.”

Why did horror writer Stephen King use the name Hemingford as a setting in two of his novels (It, The Stand) and a short story?

Patsy Parkin, Wheatland, Wyo.

For King, fictional Hemingford Home is where the heartland is. And it’s named after the real Hemingford, Neb. “I originally used Hemingford Home in The Stand,” King says, “because I wanted to put Mother Abigail in the American heartland. That’s Nebraska. Hemingford was in the right place. … I love Nebraska and keep going back to it in my fiction — when I’m not in Maine, that is.”

To whom is singer Carrie Underwood engaged?

Seba P. Norman, High Point, N.C.

Canadian hockey player Mike Fisher, 29, popped the question to the country music superstar, 27, in December. Fisher signed a five-year, $21 million contract with the Ottawa Senators in 2007, so Underwood tells us the wedding will have to be scheduled around hockey season. Meanwhile, she has started the dress hunt, tearing pages out of bridal magazines and pasting them into an idea binder. She realizes that two busy lives make for one challenging relationship: “It’s going to be a rough five years as long as he’s playing hockey, [but] we love each other, and we’ll make it work.”
