Susan Sarandon, 63, is busy prepping for Sunday night's Emmy Awards (NBC, 8 ET/5 PT), in which she's nominated for her performance in HBO's Jack Kevorkian film You Don't Know Jack. But it's not the dress fittings that worry the nominee; it's her shoes. A couple of months ago, during a charity trip to Haiti, Sarandon slipped and fell, injuring an already creaky joint in her right foot to the extent that it had to be replaced. As her foot heals, forget heels — but being laid up has its benefits. "It's given me an excuse to stay home [in New York] with the boys,"Jack, 21, and Miles, 18 (Dad is Sarandon's ex-partner, Tim Robbins). "One of the best compliments you can be given is when your kids want to come home and spend time with you. I'm always radically grateful and always a bit sentimental about how much longer this can go on."
Gabourey Sidibe, 27, earned a bestactress Oscar nomination for her first film role, Precious, and now she stars in Showtime's The C Word (10:30 p.m. ET/PT), but don't expect her to turn into a diva. "I'm an actress. The most important part of what I do is acting. I don't need 40 cases of apple juice in my trailer or a bowl of blue M&Ms. "That has nothing to do with what I do."
What is Stephen Rea from 1992's The Crying Game up to in 2010?
Jody Hurrish, Stevens Point, Wis.
Lately, the Irish theater veteran has teamed up with a treasure of the American stage, Sam Shepard. Rea's manager tells us that Rea, 63, just wrapped an indie Western, Blackthorn, co-starring Shepard, and earlier this year he performed in the playwright's well-received Ages of the Moon. Two years ago, Rea headlined another acclaimed Shepard play, Kicking a Dead Horse. He recently re-partnered with another frequent (and Irish) collaborator, The Crying Game writer/director Neil Jordan: Rea plays a priest in Ondine, now in movie theaters.
Can you tell me more about Expecting Mary, which stars Dallas' Linda Gray?
Kimberlee Steele, Santa Cruz, Calif.
Expecting Mary (in theaters Sept. 10) sees the former Sue Ellen Ewing as Darnella, a one-time Vegas showgirl living in New Mexico and performing in an Indian casino. "Her world is still glamorous in her mind," Gray, 69, tells us. Gray's friendship with co-stars Elliott Gould, Cybill Shepherd and Della Reese has continued since last August's shoot. "We're still hanging out together, like Larry (Hagman), Patrick (Duffy) and me, 30 years later" over threehour lunches.
Was the cute ER doctor on The Doctors ever on The Bachelor? Is he married?
Veronica Robert, Westland, Mich.
"I had never intended to be in front of the camera," Travis Stork, 38, tells us of his start on ABC's The Bachelor. "I went to dinner with colleagues, and casting people were there." After six weeks in Paris as the Season 8 Bachelor and a broken off relationship, "let's just say I am not married," he teases. The biking enthusiast recently published a guide to wellness and now splits his time between hosting The Doctors in L.A. and Nashville, where he lives a "completely normal life."
Who sings the opening song on Monk? Is it the same artist who sang the song at the end of the finale?
Scott Beck, South Haven, Mich.
You've got it ' both songs, including theme song It's a Jungle Out There, are by Randy Newman. "The song ' and singer ' became the musical 'voice' of the series," creator Andy Breckman tells us, "so when we were planning the finale, it seemed a natural choice for Mr. Newman to say goodbye for us." Newman hits Monk's final note with When I'm Gone.
